We have a locally owned, private phone company here. We were able to get DSL through them, but we had to be within 3 miles of the nearest "switch".

The basic DSL package is 3mb/s download and 0.5 mb/s upload and that is $48 a month. They just raised it from $44. I think its probably more expensive than the national companies, but the trade off is local service, which is nice. You tend to know most of the folks in the office because they're local, so when problems arise, the service is pretty good.

Verizon does not come out here, and probably never will. They seem to have their sights set on something else, and are perfectly happy to let Comcast get all the business.
Tracfone uses whatever cell tower is available. The lady I spoke to told me that they utilize both AT&T as well as Verizon where I am. Strange that Verizon did not suggest wireless, but I don't think they really care anyway.

Just becareful as "uses whatever is available" is true of the network but not of the phone. Unless they came up with something new, a particular tracfone will use At&t towers OR verizon towers. If one is better than another in your area, make sure you choose a phone that will use the right network (used to be GSM was at&t and CDMA was verizon which usually comes up when doing a good search of a phone you like).

Yeah, I have been finding that out. The Rep told me that both towers were available, but I suspect, because of what the Tracfone website offers in relation to my zip code (I tried all the surrounding, as well, as my zip is "borrowed" from another area) that The AT&T is the stronger. I hope I am correct. I settled on an open face phone, as the flip phones didn't seem to have the best ratings on sound quality, which is the most important feature to me.
Some people seem to carry on a love affair with their cellphones, but all I want is a dam telephone. No camera, no internet, no other junk.

UPDATE--Comcast is scheduled to come and run the line on the 21st. I have already had a pitchwoman call me at work trying to sell me an "upgrade"! I patiently explained (for the tenth time) that I don't want TV or phone, and also, why don't we wait to see if I even LIKE the service before you try to sell me some more? Sigh. Guess that will be a regular thing, now.:)

I fixed that. I don't have phone with Comcast, just internet and cable. I told them if they called to ask me one more time about their flippin "triple play" they would have "no play" as I would cancel my service and go elsewhere. They didn't know I had no other options, but the calls stopped :)
