anyone install their own fridge compressor?

I've got to replace my fridge compressor. I've got all the parts and have no trouble brazing, etc.

Anyone attempt this? Tips?

You're going to need a vacuum pump and some time, also.

Additionally you need to know how many pounds of refrigerant is required for the system, a gauge set and a good scale. In order to buy refrigerant you need a EPA certificate that can be done on line and expect you will have to buy more than you need. For most folks it less costly to have a tech do it.

Anyone can buy R134A. They sell it @ Walmart

And older fridge is gonna use R-22. There will be a tag on the old compressor or somewhere that tells ya the type.

R12, but that's for a fridge 20 yrs old. R12 is about $1200 for a cylinder now and not worth it
