Is this normal? I went out to the wood pile and some of the stuff I cut down last fall is sprouting

Wow, must be some wet wood.

The leaves look like willow, and I have seen cut willow do that.

+1, I've seen Willow here do that.
Should help dry the wood, it's taking a lot of moisture out of the wood to grow leaves.

As others have said . . . willow can do this.

Only way to stop zombie wood from coming back is to hack it up (preferably in splits appropriate to your needs), stack it to the side and watch patiently for a year or so to make sure it isn't coming back to life and then burn it in your woodstove . .. just to be sure it doesn't come back to life.

Willow. You can't stick a branch in the ground and get a brand new tree.

That is willow...I had some that did the same thing until I split it...STUFF IS HORRIBLE AND SMELLS REALLY BAD!

Why can't good trees be like that? I'd have a beautiful hedge by now!

Same as your tree this Larch was cut down last fall and is trying to grow. After reading your thread I noticed this and told the kids "hey look at the zombie wood!" They were quite interested in seeing how zombies could be in the wood pile :)

Shortleaf pine is the only pine species that will sprout from the stem with epercormic branching, if there are nodes below where it was cut. This means when you bushhog all the green off one in a field it will often resprout. Or if the top breaks out in a storm in dosent neccessarily die if the branchs sprout back.

Now that those who may not know about its ability, i cut some shortleaf to make something for out wedding, did not use it and that summer after we married or the next spring i had them sprout in the shed where i had placed them that summer or summer before in the case if it was next spring.
