Told ya you were gonna like that saw.;)

Now that you have it in your hands with a little run time - do you still think you need a little saw??
It's not really fair to ask that question to someone that has an 036 pro and a 40cc craftsman.o_O

If he had one of these for comparison I know what the answer would be ;)

I certainly agree that I don't "need" a little saw! I will still take it along as a back up in the event that I need one, but the Stihl is just too sweet!! :)

And SmokinJ... I am looking for a good sharpening "kit" right now. Any recommendations?

Thanks

BDB

get some files, and read up on sharpening a chain.......also, lots of good vids on Youtube...

SmokinJ's post earlier about 'taking the rakers down a tick and doing the cutters at 35 degrees' was a description that would make that saw cut WICKED FAST....but it'll also dull faster, too. For now, just keep the chain the way it is. After a while on here, you'll know all the lingo......

He is running 40:1 fuel and when it left my crib, I turned the H screw pretty fat for break in.

He has a LOT of power to unlock just by mixing 50:1 and turning that scree about 1/4-1/3 of a turn.

I sent a new 30° and a new sharpened 30°… If he learns how to sharpen well and take them rakers down a little, that 036 will cut about twice as fast !!! Better hold Don. CAD happens fast brother! LOL

Hence this comment from a previous thread:

"For gawds sake - if you are gonna get a small limbing saw (an there is NOTHING wrong with that) at least get an equal quality machine. It only makes sense."

I will give you one guess who said that.

Don't listen too them Donnie. Stick your fingers in your ears and sing lalalalalalalala. It is the only known method to ward off CAD.;lol

Yep, I was done buying saws until a nice running 281XP appeared on craigslist yesterday....... I'm surprised you didn't get to it before me Dex.

Did you get it? I had my Sons baseball game last night....

I seen it. Just couldn't do anything about it. :(

Wanna sell it ;) j/k...

I think death is the only REAL cure. Everything else is a bandaid on a bullet wound.

Really anything that shows the degree makes and you can read them very well you will be ok. Everyone will be trying to teach you how to file. Some take to it very quick but most do not. I was thought to put the bar between my feet and look down at the degree mark and hit it. Thats what I did and it still works. This does not mean after a period of time you will need a grinder to open the gulett back up.

You are right, Jay! I've been doing it so long now, I could probably do it blindfolded with one hand tied behind my back (with the Dremel and stones)!!:p

All I can say is Dad taught me well all those years ago.....

I was curious what to do with that new square chisel .404 chain Saw-King is sending me later this week with very good late '60's vintage 30 inch roller nose bar (already had a near new square chisel that came with the SP125 & older 31" Sugihara bar).Since over 30 yrs I've never tried to file a square chisel.Saw King just said "Anytime you want to change it to the round chisel you're used to - just grab your standard 7/32 round file, after a few sharpenings it'll be shaped that way.No worries...."

On that 42" bar on my 051AV with the .404 chain, I just use the 7/32" stones. It cuts just as fast that way as it did with the square chisel, and the time you save on the sharpenings (lot more painstaking to do the square chisel, IMO) is well worth the changeover..

I really need to get on with shooting the video with Nixon's chain. That's the square vs round filed chisel video.

And so far I have only used the sharpened chain and NOT the new one. I wanted to "learn" on the used one and save the NEW chain for when I am a "PRO"! ;)

Got a bunch of ash to process this weekend!

Well, it's pretty common for me to change the chain mid-way thru a full day of cutting. Too often, I'll hit something inside a log that knocks it dull, I'll just notice the chips getting gradually smaller. So, don't plan on getting too many hours out of one chain before changing or sharpening.

I DID cut right between a string of NAILS that had been swallowed by the tree! I didn't notice until I split the wood!

Going to by a sharpening kit this week!

42" bar holy $hit that is severe overkill Scott! You are quite a character!

Stihl in the same chain? Never sharpened? You are either lucky? Or.... Gotta be luck. I go through 2 a day when cutting a lot. The second the Chios get small, I swap and sharpen later.

Looking forward to more pics

One pebble and it's file time!
