i was browsing craigslist and came across two chainsaws that i'm wondering how good of a deal they may be.
stihl ms361 for $350 (no pictures)
http://charlotte.craigslist.org/grd/3801226122.html
husqvarna 359 for $350
http://charlotte.craigslist.org/tls/3817844434.html

i was considering getting a new ms290 or 455 than i decided to see what i could find used. still not really sure if i feel like buying one from someone i don't know. there is also an ms310 for $325, but i'm not sure if that's quite low enough to consider. thanks for any replies.

The 359 is at a pawn shop. Which means they probably have a lot less than 350 into it. Might be able to walk in with cash and get a better deal.

If the 361 is in good shape I'd be all over that.
guess i'll need to go check it out in person.

ha, you know, i thought it was odd they had business type hours, and didn't think to look up the phone number, or check the address. i notice you've sold every husky you've ever owned... story?

If the bar on that 359 is original, that looks to be a low hour saw. However, the price is high......$250-275 would be a good price.

I don't know about Mike ;lol , he kept an 026 and sold a 346 !!!.

Just kinda happened -- I've been buying saws when I see a good deal and reselling them. People around here are willing to pay top dollar for Huskies. The stihl saws have been harder to get top dollar for. To be honest the 394xp I had was a stronger saw than my ms660. And I kinda wish I hadn't sold my 268xp...

Interesting how location determines brand loyality and price. As I've said before Huskys are cheap in my area and well used stihls demand top dollar, especially the homeowner models.

Good luck - sweet saw! Cheers!

Stop what you're doing right now, get in your car, drive as fast as you can to get that 361. If it really is in decent condition, it will not last long on CL.

I go with the 361 first, if in good shape.
Then the 359, I like mine.
New, Husqy 460 over the 455
New stihl ; MS 261 or 362

There was a ms362 here for 350 that lasted 3 weeks. Tried a couple times to get it for under 200 but no luck :(

It depends on the condition of course, and I have passed on several 361s and 440s here that were beaters.

But the CL chiselers... Every saw I have sold on CL has had lowball offers like that. I ignore them and in every case, I got the price I asked for (except for one deal where I dropped the price of a near new lightly modified 310 to $300 from $325 when he bought a clean stock 361 with it for $500). Some saws sit for a few weeks, some sell right away. I can wait.

he said he would take $320, but i may be out of luck on it. i couldn't meet this evening because of work, and he can't meet any time tomorrow because of work. so i'm supposed to call him saturday.

If it is in good condition and you really want it, $350 is a good price. Just before they were discontinued, a new 361/20" was $609 in my region.
