I helped a buddy cut this yesterday. Is it ash?

I am not good with the leaf identification but the wood sure looks like ash.

Yeppers.

Edit: Nope, nosiree-bob.

Ash ;)
Looks like it might have been in a fire/s a few years back. Black stuff in the growth rings.

Those are ash-like leaves for sure. They are called compound leaves when they grow like that.

Hickory, Black "stuff" in the growth rings is birdpeck, very common in Hickory.

Y'know, I think nford is right. Do a Google image search for 'hickory flowers' and those long strands seen in the last pic above are obvious.

Yep, nrford know's his trees. Definitely a hickory. Ash doesn't have those pollen sacs like the hickory does.....

Also, the dark heartwood and highly pronounced rings scream hickory....

Thanks! Got about a half cord of it and it's a bit of a struggle splitting.

Yep, hickory. Ain't it a biotch to split? Burns and smells great. Save some to BBQ and smoke with.

Yep Hickory......have half a cord of rounds and hadn't thought about the black spots until I was out back this evening. I also have some ash that has some of the dark in the center. nrford hit another one.

Bark doesn't look like the Pignut or Shagbark I see here, but there are several other species....

No pinhole in center of cutside, they are spot-on it is Hickory and that's better than Ash for kickin' out the heat. Great score!

Without the leaf pic that said Hickory, I would have skeptically accepted the Ash consensus. The bark really doesnt say hickory, does it?
Birdpeck is interesting, have to remember that one. And thats what sapsucker damage looks like? hmmm...

I'd be really excited to find I had hickory instead of Ash. Those piles become the coveted private stash.

I would've also thought ash at first look. I've cut a lot of ash both yard birds and forest trees. None have ever had growth rings as tight as the tree pictured though. Ash grow like weeds.........
