I am trying to determine if the Progress Hybrid will fit on my fireplace hearth set up. I don't think it will, but I've been reconsidering.

In looking at the dimension sheet:

http://www.woodstove.com/images/editorial_support/ProgressManual/dimspecs.pdf

I am not clear as to the minimum amount of stove that must project OUT of my fireplace in order for me to have access to the side load door. The 25" and 20.5" dimensions listed do not fully explain this.

I need it to stick out enough that obviously I can access the side load door, but what about being able to lift the top to access the cat?

Also, I will be using the short leg kit, but will likely not have 16" of stone in front of the stove. (plenty of stone on the side load door side). I have a hardwood floor. What is the minimum needed in front of the stove, if I use the ash lip and short leg kit, and can I use a hearthrug or something similar?

Ok, let's sell me a Progress Hybrid...

Lumber, how deep is your hearth (front to the fireplace opening)? What is the lintel height? Is the hearth raised above the hardwood floor? The load door opens to about 24" measured from the front of the stove. The top stones will be about 1/3 of the way into the area of the top flue when open. If you have to push the stove back into the fireplace (not recommended) will you be able to access the cleanout for the liner?

For the final word, call Woodstock, but I believe the ash lip on the PH drops the front hearth requirement down to 8", which can be vertical or horizontal, as with the Fireview. If you put a Fireview on an 8" raised hearth, it can sit out on the front edge of the hearth.

I found this in the manual:

STOVE WITH SHORT LEG OPTION (Requires ash lip)
A. Floor protection in front of stove = 16”

I'll have to get my measurements and post them, but I just don't have 16" if too much of the stove has to project out of the fireplace to access the side door.

Does anyone know the planned dimensions of the Union Hybrid? I know its front load, which will help a lot, but I'm still worried about clearances.

I'm guessing woodstocks are NOT ember protection only stoves.

I'm allowed to buy a new stove, but not allowed to redo the living room or the hearth.<>

Remember that you can add the vertical height of your hearth, if there is any, to the sides without the loading door to meet clearances. By taking a measurement off our PH, I would say that you could push the stove back so 18" sticks out and you could still open the door and get to the cat. If it was tight on the side you would have to lengthen the draft control somehow though. Would want to check with woodstock to see if this was ok.

Only 1 in above floor. Thanks for the measure. I'll take some more measures myself and see if it works out.

I imagine that if you don't have sufficient room, or even to keep the stove as far as possible n the room, you can get Woodstock to order a 1 foot wide 1 inch thick hearth for you (maybe it's 1 1/8 inch...it's fairly slim) , and simply lay it in front of your hearth on the wood floor, to solve any possible clearance issue.

Their hearths are nicely made and quite attractive. I have a deep blue one, with a light grey stove, that I've had for seven years or so. Like it as much today as the day I got it...and it looks brand new still. Has taken a beating and shows no wear.

I'd think you'd be well off to go this route, and allow plenty of room for loading, and for cleaning, and for heat to get into the room.

I think any front loading stove has to have a minimum 18" front clearance. That would make my installation of the Union Hybrid difficult.

I didn't even realize that was possible. Just soaptone set directly on top of the hardwood??

I also keeping reading about stoves that are ember protection only. For these stoves could I just use a hearth rug to extend the hearth?

I think I also read woodstock is NOT an ember protection only stove??

Woodstock is not ember protection only.

They do sell hearth pads that are manufactured for them., They are not soapstone. They are high R value, designed for their stoves. They will have them made to any size. They are very slim - just a bit over an inch thick. You could get one made in a wide choice of tops to your needs for a hearth. I imagine a foot depth would be plenty of extension for you. You can have the corners angled back to the hearth to make it more convenient for walking to the side of the stove.
