So I got asked to take part in a work group (well, kinda true...I asked to be part of it) to help write an ANSI standard for the inspection of solid fuel appliances. The standard is a BPI standard and is the second part of two standards, BPI-1000 and BPI-2000. Where is 1000 is the "what to do", 2000 is the "how to do it". These standards are for energy auditors. When conducting an energy audit, there needs to be a way to include solid fuel appliances as part of the overall heating system people use in there house.

Two years ago I tried to spearhead a move to write a "service Standard" for solid fuel appliances...predominantly...pellet appliances.

Kinda psyched here...thinking about what is involved got me to sit and think about the day to day work we do and how we do it. So I wrote up a SOP (standard operating procedure) for my company for when we do inspections and why we do inspections. Attached is my SOP.

Hello

I worked with ISO 9000 and ISO 9001 for manufacturing environments and more on ISO 8000 for software under development standards. It gets OLD real fast.
You cannot have the same standards for a 1 or 2 man shop as a 10 or 20 man shop. Too much red tape!

Also one question from your SOP that requires all switches to be tested in their NO and NC states? How do you test a 250 Deg F High Limit switch in the OPEN position which means the interior of the stove has reached or exceeded 250 Degs F? ? Reminds me of the Nuclear plant testing in Chernobal a few years back.

Here is a good site for small biz

:( Mine fails level two inspection. Damn cut off plates. Looks like a summer project to me.

Looks good though. One small suggestion which may or may not apply but something about all stoves electrical connections shall have a properly sized surge protection system?

Surge systems fall outside of the scope as they are a secondary system that doesn't contribute anything to efficiency or safey. Good thought though. Some homes have whole house or line circuit protectors and teasing those would be way beyond this scope.

Red tape is what you make of it. I perform at the sop I wrote out and feel very comfortable with it. Too much for someone else to handle? Perhaps, but that's what separates me from them. Wanna be like me... There's my standard. I do however see lots of people using my pricing though...too bad folks charge as much as me and are essentially getting paid to learn at a customers expense.

Writing that sop was a terrific exercise.
