Because I cut a bunch of my wood about 11" for this coming season. It took a little more labor, but after burning a bunch of shorts N-S last year, I really like it. I've got this row of 11 inchers, and over a cord of the same stacked around the inside perimeter of my shed.

Good for you Blacktail. My bottom row must be laid N-S or I will get a dirty burn.

I have been cutting my wood to 14" for a N/S burn and I like it. A little bit more work but I like the uniformity and ultimately the fact that everything is the same length things become easier. I cut a piece of locust branch to 14" and use a hatchet to mark what I am cutting and then I buck and cut.

I burn N/S for startup fires, but usually burn E/W for longer burntimes. N/S also can burn better if the wood is not fully seasoned.

Do you get longer burn times burning north/south than east/west ?

I'm not following why the 11". 16" long is a good length that the wood can be loaded either way.

Yes. Probably because I can load pack the stove full. Loading side to side I can't get as much wood in.

12" is the longest I can fit front to back in my insert.

Ah, got it. I was thinking of the free-stander.

Nice. NS is definitely the way to pack that sucker to the max.

I scrounge and buy my wood so I'm sort of at the mercy of others with my log lengths. This year I burned probably 50/50. I like the view of an EW fire better in my stove. It also seems to burn a little slower at EW. Everyone has their own preference and it's always nice to have the option.

So do you actually cut 10" to make sure you have 11" or under. As If I try to cut for a specific number like say your 11" max length, I will always get some that goes over and wont fit in the stove.

I just eyeballed it. It'll take up to 12" N-S. If I have any that are over 12" I'll still burn them. They just wont fit front to back.

Seems that the row would easily tip over since it is so skinny. Like a dominoe.

Thanks cant get this out of my mind now...

converted to N/S a couple of years ago and will likely not go back, certainly can pack more in and burn longer. My Lopi takes a 14" easily with at least an inch to spare for operator error, which are typically caught once all the wood is stacked in the sun and I notice an odd ball or 10. Then I just trim them in the stack and never have a problem come burning time.

With splits that short you could probably get three rows on a standard 48" pallet.

I started the same last year. It was easier to load it full, also when reloading a stove I didn't have to reach in all the way to the back to put log on hot coals. Im not sure if I get longer burns N/S or E/W but liked loading a lot more N/S

N/S seems far better in my Lopi Freedom too, but nearly all my wood was split before that insert came. N/S burns more completely and steadily, but E/W isn't a problem unless I'm really trying to fill it to the hilt,

It's June, 89F outside, what the heck am I doing here?
