Pellet Stove Ash

Last season I bought a Quadrafire Sante Fe in very early January and burned just shy of three tons which seems like a lot for my 880 sq ft house (Hudson Valley NY.My question is the ash was almost always dark, almost black. Any woodfire ash I ever saw was lighter. Could I be running this too rich?.

Black is a definite sign of reduced air in the ATF. Are you sure everything is clean?

Pellet ash is a little darker than wood ash, but DASKY is right beacuse the hotter your burn, the lighter it seems to be. Sometimes I burn stuff in my wood insert that's a little on the wet side, and its a little darker.

Dasky, excuse my ignorance, but this was my first season. What does the ATF stand for in regards to pellet stoves?

Yeah. Ash should be pretty light coloured in a Quad.

Seems you have a Leaky door gasket? Pot drop out hanging to low? Etc..

The ash that my quad produces from softwood pellets (red pine) is much darker than the that of the hardwood pellet I burn (somerset). Cleaner but definately much darker.... And, I might add, when I burned the softwood my stove would go through a hopper quicker....
