A while back my wife and I passed the neighbor's place while on our atv. The neighbor lady has a big round wooden container by one of the driveways and she planed hostas in it. Wife said, "I wonder how long before the deer get to them?"

The deer found them. So I talked to the lady and she told me about first giving the kids a good talking to about her flowers. She was mad. Then something again so this time she jumped on her husband. Evidently he set her straight on what was into her hostas. Deer love them! ;lol

Deer also love sunflowers so a warning to others if they want to keep the sunflowers. Of course, they deer also love peas, beans, etc, etc.

Deer around here pulled my moutain laurel bushes right out of the ground, ate and entire strawberry pot of hens and chicks (little cactus) and last year overnight one night, ran through my garden, got stuck in the fence trying to eat zuchinni plant blossoms. I now leave the jewel weed grow 4-5 ft tall and they eat that instead, easy to get to and juicy :)

They can be destructive on plants...I also found that they love small Maple tree saplings...:(
These two came up looking over our plant buffet...

Four and a half acres of this place is woods. I never have to be concerned with underbrush, well except thousands of those damned Holley trees. The deer keep the shoots and saplings all cleaned out. For 30 years now. And I never mow the septic drain field. They love whatever that stuff is that grows on it.

My garden has a produce section and checkout stands.

My dogs leave deposites all around the edge of the property. The deer no longer enter my yard. My dogs don't chase the deer. Doubt they have ever seen one. These deer don't like the odor of dog mess. Before the big dogs, they were eating the Yews right next to the foundation of my house. I don't even have those pesty ground hogs anymore. My hosta gets eaten by the slugs and snails.
Before I got the big dogs, I had a buck in my yard that wouldn't scare off. He would stand there and snort, dig the dirt, and not go away until I tossed something at him. The hunters come around every fall and pull a few out of the back woods. I am sure that keeps the population in better control. I also have an electric fence around my vegetable garden.

On our afternoon walk in the woods one afternoon Michelle the Woodpile Panther cat surprised me. We came across four deer grazing and she took off straight at them and they hauled butt. ;lol

They also love the front and driver side of my pickup truck!

Six or seven years ago I was selling some new Jotul cast iron gas stoves and put a few up on eBay for local pickup only. A guy in Ontario contacted me about one. I did every thing in the world to talk him out of it. He bought it anyway and immediately sent Paypal payment. I called him and tried to talk him out of it again. No way.

He drove half a day and all night long and showed up here to pick it up. In a brand new pickup truck with a fender and half the grill demolished. In the middle of the night he hit a deer in Pennsylvania and kept on going.

He didn't give a damn about his busted pickup but was ecstatic looking at his new blue/black Jotul. Loaded up and headed back.

Deer are a pain and some Canucks are nuts. ;lol

Deer eat my...well...everything, except hostas. Never once touched them and I have a ton.

Susan & I came back from the Gaspe Peninsula run & expected our Tiger Lilies to be in full bloom. Last year we had over 250, from the original 25 or so my youngest daughter transplanted about 8 years ago. We pull up to the house, 5 blooms. All the rest had been munched by the bambis. They must taste really good, because the hostas were untouched...This is also the first summer without a dog in the house...Hmmm...

It would be funny if my little 10-13# dogs were responsible for the deer avoiding my hostas. Something for them to feel proud of I suppose.

They probably feel that they since are descended from wolves, just like all the other dogs, they're just as ferocious... Besides, nobody ever proved to them that they weren't Rotties or GSDs.

LOL- naw, so many people have little dogs that think they're big, or big ones that think they're lap dogs. My little dogs know they're little. If there's no human lap to sit on, Chloe will sit on Mr. Moose's lap. Lappiest lap dog ever sat on a lap.

The first time I saw mountain laurel I loved it. Wish we had some here but I was not aware the deer would eat it. For sure the hens and chicks are top eating for them.

Most definitely maple is another one on the top of their list. Especially in the north where there is no farming. Folks who cut trees all tell how the deer come running when the machines start up.

I have a huge double Beech tree in the backyard. It is funny to watch when I lop lower limbs off of it and leave them on the ground. A deer food fest breaks loose.

Deer will eat anything here except my bamboos and irises. All the trees here have deer hair cuts at about 6 feet. I also have a deer fenced area (8 foot tall netted area), and the berries and potted tress and shrubs that I am sizing up are all in there. I keep my hostas in large pots by the back of the house on the concrete patio and they have avoided them there so far.

My daughter hit a deer a few weeks back ... the cop that took the statement said he usual averages at least one every two years. Comes under the title of routine auto maintenance.;lol

Deer are a pain but I'd rather find a deer than a moose. Your lucky to walk away breathing if you hit a moose... never mind the vehicle
