Cut down 2 ash about 18 inches in dia this is the first year they had no leaves at all was real surprised when I split and checked with my mm all splits I checked were 20% or 21% should be real nice by the time I use it in a couple
Of years

I cut a few dead ones this year as well

Wow! You could burn that now. Ash dries quick, but that is a good score.

Oh ya U can burn that in October
I burned a lot of dead ash last year and, will be burning a lot more this year that was cut n split in May ,most is under 20% now

Wow, I've never seen it that low, that fast. _g

Heck if it was at 20-21%, and it's split and stacked now, it'll probably be ready by this winter!! Sounds like a good score!

That's a good score and quite a bit of wood out of it. That moisture content might not drop but 3% over that 2 year period.

I'll be cutting a big ash down tomorrow and Wednesday evenings......it's a doosy, I think it's sick with the 'bug'. Branches have been snapping off of it the past year now, it's around 60' and leaning towards the homeowner's house. We'll get some good firewood out of it, but most of it will be going to my cutting partner....he's got some catching up to do in regards to hoarding wood.....

Heck I cut down a dead ash in the spring, 12" at the base it was 17% ,(after splitting) 1/3 of the way up it was 12%,
Edit The smaller ash I cut, In the winter I burned the same day

Split small 25% ash will loose 5% in 2 months in cold weather, stacked right, and covered

Our ash trees are getting to the point where you can cut and burn right away. But then, most have been dead for several years. Several of the splits from last spring were beginning to show some punk. I have let a couple trees go because they were so far gone.

Yeah, I guess it depends on the size of the tree, too. Most of the dead Ash I've cut has been more like low to mid 20s, but they were 18" and up. I've got a couple to cut that have been dead a long time; No small branches left. Maybe they will be drier.

Nice score - nothing like cutting stuff you can use in a few months!

I have 15 ash trees in my yard that are mostly dead. But the trees are going to have to be topped because of the power lines and house. So i am going to wait a bit the insurance company said they won't do anything about them unless they fall on the house.

Jr, that could be costly and very inconvenient! Where are you located? Send me a PM if you don't want that shown on the forum.

I am in Midland, MI

i will see what comes back next year but i hope they will hold on for a couple years until the wife is done with school.

Or at least tell next year after i burn off some of this wood.
