Nice deal if that is the only damage. Yes, the heat shield is replaceable. I'd be tempted to have it welded.

The repair is some what simple. Once you remove the top that is gasketed then remove one side that is stove cemented. The rear will then come off. Clean the joints, recement them, reinstall the gasketed top, and away you go. All bolts are eithe 10mm or 13mm.

Are you asking if this crack is in the heat shield? If so, I cannot really tell for sure . . . but it appears to me to not be the heat shield . . . again hard to tell though.

I can tell you that is not the heat shield, seems to be the back of the stove, but hard to tell. If so, very replaceable. It will involve some disassembly and re-cementing, but like jotulguy above says, its doable, then you have a beautiful 2500 dollar stove. I've repaired many jotuls myself, being new, this one will not be bad to work on. Good luck with it, the Oslo is one of the best cast stoves available in my view.

+1. That's in the stove body. The heat shield is sheet metal - not cast. That bad boy looks like it got dropped or tipped over...Replace that one piece & re-cement & regasket & you've got one of Jotul's best wood burners...

Woodsman's Parts Plus.

That stove was dropped / tipped. That's not heat damage.

I would be wondering what else could have happened if it was dropped. Tipped over wouldn't be as bad.
Could cement in other joints have been popped loose? If I already had the back off I would look closely at everything else that I could, before re-assembling it.
I would like to hear the rest of the story of why it is so cheap.....

If you look at the pic you see that the pallet was dropped. The stove should be sitting on the top boards. The guys delivering my F3 did the same thing and broke the door hinges, which are cast into the frontplate, off.

That aint no heat shield thats part of the stove. Lets see, 800 bucks for the stove, damned near a grand for a new part, work and time to fix it, sounds like a thanks but no thanks deal to me. By the time you get done dickin around with it you could have a new one. Someones just tryin to make a buck offin thier own mistake on that stove. I'm cheap but even I would pass on that deal.

I'd probably pass, too. But, I could see someone buying it. If you can confirm nothing else expensive is broken, you'd have a new F500 for under $2k. What do they normally fetch?

I agree that it was dropped, but it's sitting on the skid correctly. Jotul ships there bigger stoves nested down in the skid like that.

Interesting. Must just be the wood stoves. I sold nine GF300, GF400 and GF600 Jotul gas stoves and they were all on top of the pallets. One GF400 still in the garage on the pallet.

yea unless you can get it for like 300-500 I would pass too. IF the guys are right that it can be had for $2500 or less new I don't see spending $800 on it used then paying $1000 for the one part that you know is busted (possibly more) and then having to take the time and small parts like cement and gaskets to put it back togeather, just to save say $400 does not seem worth it!!

I'd be inclined to go look at it, confirm that what we see here is the only damage, then low-ball him. If you are a handy guy, you should be able to handle the necessary work, I would guess. It might be worth it if you are parsimonious in nature. ==c

Disclaimer: I'm no re-build expert....

Or maybe find another F500 with a different issue, like a cracked base.

You can try and call a local dealer with the part number and see what they want for the part. I had call a dealer in town for a part for a stove I was looking at and they were a whole hell of a lot cheaper then Jotul web site.

I sold my 3 season old Oslo for $1500! I'd just look for a gently used one. It sure doesn't seem like its worth that kinda money to me. This guy is just passing on his problem to the next guy. IMHO.

Gas? Say it ain't so! Ohh, wait, I see that you sold them. Now I understand.;)
