My Dad's stacks.....

Here are a couple pics of my old man's wood stacks. We calculated it out to 8.5 cords of mostly cherry, oak and locust with some elm and maple mixed in. He and I have managed to scrounge this all since the last week of March of this year, and get it split with my fiskars and his 5 ton electric task force splitter. It's amazing how much free wood is out there.

Good stuff, same thing here with free wood. I see stuff every day that I could go after. Have more then enough to keep me busy. Heck I still have a 20" at the base mulberry to cut up and bring home that I dropped in a pasture last spring.

We have scrounged our whole stack, mostly by car, and are up to 3.6 cord at last measure. A back injury slowed me down for about a month. Truck and healthy back have me making up for lost time.

I'm pretty impressed with the 5 ton electric splitter. It does real well with most of what we have put on it, and is often able handle larger pieces than what it is rated for. It does struggle with some of the stringy elm though. My dad bought it for $100 from a buddy of ours, who bought it a year or 2 ago for $300.

Yep. Free wood is the only way to go. Some can't do it with little kids and activities
but it eventually works out. Then your kids are helping you hopefully. I scrounged
7 cord since November 2012. I hand split so i don't take huge rounds, or Elm.

Man that is nice scenery.....magnify the second picture and look at the beautiful flowers and plants, and that little babbling brook-it looks like a peaceful spot that you could sit and relax and with all that wood stacked there you'd think you were in Heaven.....

Funny you mention all the wood that is available. Even around us, there is enough firewood just in dead ash and elm to supply hundreds or thousands of homes. In the end, most will just lay and rot. Lots of woodlots look terrible now with all the dead trees.

I know! I think so many people are scared of being sued is what makes it hard to get to some of it. But there are still lots of good scrounges to be had out there. I've got my eye on a few more.

nice stacks - we are currently in the middle of winter and i find it a lot harder to find wood this time of year as everyone wants it to burn straight away. I just sit back for a few more months when everybody has forgotten about the cold weather and then its very easy to collect. i see adds on Ebay etc for you to buy green wood this time of year but wait another month and they can't wait to give it away....

I thought we were done a month ago, but the old man keeps finding room to put a couple more pallets down, haha. We have a couple more cherry rounds to split up, so I think after that we can at least afford to be more selective with our scrounges. I'm turning into a wood snob. I think we are both addicted, but I have to admit I think we are both having fun in the process and it doesn't really feel like work, except during the heat wave here last week.

Hated those 90+ muggy days.
Now 80° here is hot. Climatized to Alaska now, but I remember evenings, sitting under a shade tree sweating down there.
2 days in a row in the 80s here. A Summer to remember
