Introduced myself to the new guy that moved a trailer in around the corner from me. the wife me him a few weeks back when he was walking. I mentioned i burn wood as he told the wife he was cutting some trees down. He told me to cut up the Walnut that just blew over in his yard!! And said he will be cutting several more over time and i could have them as well.

That stuff is almost going to be too painfull to cut up but sure will look good.

Should burn decent although walnut is not as hard as oak or hickory it should still give decent BTU's.

Can't argue with a close, easy score!
I haven't burned Walnut yet but those who have seem to like it quite a bit...they say it smells good, too.

The Black Walnut I burned over the last couple years burns nice, decent BTU's, not as much as Oak etc., but still decent. Leaves LOTS of fine white ashes. I just tamp them down with the fireplace shovel. It packs down real easy. Light & fluffy. Burn it on the bottom, and that way it won't cover other wood and shield it with the ash from burning.

Id take it and then get it to a sawmill. And find something to do with it. Fireplace mantel...or something.
Well it has a bit of rot i beleive, after cutting a small bit last evening. There is no straight truck either, maybe 4ft of trunk then some branches that are knotty and twisted and some with rot, not much sawable wood to make it worth it.

Now it i had an "alaskan mill" or my own wood mizer or something i would figure something out, it would be good hobby wood but nothing thats really decent. Could maybe get a few mantles out of it or something i guess?

I love walnut......even though the trunk is smaller, you may want to consider milling the trunk and just burn the rest of it.....

Can't beat a free walnut tree right around the corner (unless it was a free locust tree of equivalent size);)

Here is pic of the first 2 small loads that I split then stacked.almost feel bad burning it. Notice I said almost. :)

It is beautiful wood but I'd burn it too.

Got another small ranger load tonight.

I see a lot of rotten cores with Walnut I come across down here. Neighbor a couple houses up has a dead standing one I was going take down until I realized it's got a hollow ~4' to ~30' up.
It's a better home for the Raccoons than marginal heat in my stacks

Free walnut, close to home. You cant beat that with a stick and not come out a winner.

That looks like a load, alright! _g

I still need to split that twenty-year-old top I found, but no hurry....I think it's dry already. ==c

Its hard to see it well with all the junk in the background!!

This is literally 200ft down paved roads from my house on streets that i passed no one before someone talks about them rolling off etc.

And my ranger is so old and carried heavy stuff in the past that the springs are way weaker than others i have seen. Put a few hundred pounds in it and it squats pretty good.

You are the only guy I know that takes his stove outside for the summer to air it out. ;)

Still, that looks like it's stacked high....a good load. What's your guess as to what it will stack out to, all told?
.

There's no stove out there?

Heck I bet that's only 1/4 cord. Its just thrown in not stacked so there is good bit of air n there. I was only cutting a bit and as its so close I was not worried so much about Max space.

OK seems kike I am responding g to myself, but I stacked it today and it stacked out to right at 1/4 cord which is about what I can always get in the truck. I can get close to 1/3 when I stack neat and cram it under the toolbox.
