Found a CL post for a Husqvarna 261 for $25, not running. Guy gave me a couple extra parts (new plug, filter, carb rebuild kit). Previous owner said he couldn't get it started so on a whim, I figured even if it cost me $200 in a cylinder kit, it will be a good 60+cc saw to just keep in the truck.

Saw has been used but certainly not the end of its life.


Just holding the saw by the starter cord, the saw dropped to the floor so I knew it had weak compression. I pulled the muffler off and saw the piston was toast!


Currently in the process of tearing it down. Ring was seized to the piston. Heavy scoring on muffler side and a chunk missing from top of the piston. Indication of straight gassed?

Hard to tell without pulling the slug, the chunk missing suggests it might be due to excessive heat. Is there any residual oil in the engine, particularly inside the wrist pin or under the piston skirt?

Mike is absolutely correct, the 261 was indeed a winner.

You could put a 262XP top end on there and have arguable the nicest 60cc saw ever made.

That'll make a great "truck" saw indeed. Easy fix, IMO. I'd spend the extra jingle and get crank bearings and a set of crank seals (if they don't come with a gasket set), while you have it apart might as well make it brand new inside.....

Finally got around to separating the piston from the connecting rod and sure enough, no oil residue on the wrist pin.

New cylinder/Piston, new muffler, 20" sprocket nose husky bar, Oregon 72LGX chain. Tuned up and headed out for some porting.... Can't find the chainbreak cover decal!?

I bought one for an aftermarket clutch cover, to a saw I sold to someone. Ended up getting that saw back and I dont care about having the OEM sticker.

Ive heard from the husky Guys that the 261 262 is a beast of a saw for the 60 cc's class . They claim it has lots of torque , will out perform any 268 .

I keep fondling the 550XP and the 562XP at my dealer but can't help but notice how many have already showed up in his shop for much more than routine tune up and repairs. I have no idea how the saws were treated or who owned them but there isn't much there for newer hardware from "the other guys" and the in this particular shop "the other guys" get sold at least 3 to 1 over the huskys.

Can't afford the 562xp right now. Hopefully this will fill the gap between my 346 & 395 nicely.

Shipped out that sticker to you (because I didn't need it)....

Then picked up this Gem off CL yesterday. ... Gonna go by a few more stickers this evening from my dealer.

Needs new AV springs, a bolt for the chain brake handle, a good cleaning, some stickers and I dont know what else. Didn't have time to tear into it yesterday. Hoping it don't need much. For the price, I think I'm gonna keep this one too

Make your money off it. If there ever was a "battle" that Stihl won over Husqvarna quite decisively, it was the MS361 vs 357XP. Took a 562XP to get back in the 60cc game.

Saw finally came back from being ported and I threw some new decals on it. Guy who did the port work threw in a 262, 3 shoe clutch for free.


Hope to get some use out of it this weekend? What's better to break it in? 32:1 or 40:1?
