The mod is the easy part. You must either have someone show you or learn from the innerwebs how to tune a saw. It will need adjusted after it is allowed to breath.

The worst offender I have ever witnessed was a 660. So much trying to escape the little exit hole.
They did the same thing to the 460. The fix is the same for both. The dual-port mufflers are so cheap to buy (and the AM ones are actually decent quality!) that its not worth playing with the stock muffler. Bolt on, tune up, and get to rippin'!

Where is the best place to get a tach on the cheap??
Amazon. I was. Going to get one. There like $15 for a corded ones.

I am not familiar with that muffler, but you may be a able to pry up the deflector with a screwdriver and then sneak in with a dremel bit and open the factory outlet then bend the deflector back down.

A tach won't help you tune a muffler modded saw. You have to be able to hear the "4 stroke". Search that and there should be a good thread bast mastermech

Amazon. They have one for $15 I was going to get but put it off. It has the cord to wrap around the plug wire.

Okay starting my own thread so this isn't hijacked from Ohio all the way to Maine.

Hey all,

I've been burning wood in my fireplace insert for a few years, but just began gathering/splitting my own wood this year. I had a truckload of FREE sugar maple dropped of at my house on Friday that requires me to put down my axe/maul for a little while and use a chainsaw 1st to get it down to splittable lengths.

I was given a 14" Poulan, but returned it because it was near impossible to start. I just got this today:

Husqvarna 40.9cc 2-Cycle 16-in Gas Chain Saw

I know for many here the 16" would be too small, but it should be fine for my needs. Plus honestly I'm a little intimidated to use a chainsaw for the 1st time.

So questions:

1. Any thoughts/experience with this model?
2. Have you found some models/brands easier/harder to start than others?
3. Any safety advice (or any other advice) for a rookie?

Thanks -I can't wait to try it out after work!
Ok ! we went off a little
Any more questions ? :)

Nice saw
Best safety advice, other than the PPE,
when cutting with the saw,
Don't rush or hurry , good stance & grip, no distractions .....& keep your head in the game.
Your best safety tool is the gray matter between your ears ;)

Solid advice! That's exactly why I didn't buy the earmuffs I saw at the store that allows you to plug your mp3 player in. No distractions!
