As I started the first fire of the season I got to thinking that, as a North/South burner, I'd like to more easily bring the ashes to the middle from the sides. I have a hoe to bring them forward but nothing to the middle. The poker serves that function, but maybe if it'd have a blade on it... Wait a sec, there was a post a little while ago about the handy dandy machete, hmmm...

Anyone think it worthwhile?

just don't snitch one of those metal fire hydrant marker flags or they'll get upset, but maybe if you bring them a plate of cookies and ask nice they might sell you one.

Exact same situation if you burn E-W and have a side loading stove. I spoke with Woodstock about the need for a tool with the hoe blade mounted sideways, essentially, about a year ago. May go to a smith and have one made. A tool that would make for more satisfactory raking of ashes to the front and back in a side loader would be great.

Is this what you are thinking?: http://www.woodlanddirect.com/Fireplace-Accessories/Wall-Bracket-Single-Tools/Black-Steel-Ember-Rake

I use the shovel to scoop everything to the center, then rake. A side rake would be ideal. Maybe a locking swivel joint? Where's ScottyOverkill???

? I burn N/S and have no trouble raking/pushing ash and coals wherever with the typical rake ?
Large front loading door?

With a small side loading door, a rake with a head perpendicular to the common rake would be perfect. One can manage with the standard rake, but it is far from ideal. Life would be easier with an appropriate rake.

Not a bad idea, draw it up and some one can weld one together for ya.

Go buy you a simple wood stove shovel. Like the one pictured below.
Take a hammer and flatten out the stamped formed shovel.
Put it in your vice and bend a 90 deg in it. You can cut teeth in it also if you want as its easy to work with metal.
These type shovels dont cost much. I got one at Tractor Supply for under $10 a couple years ago. The handle was different. But works good to push coals/ash back then rake coals forward.

I'm about out of room on the rack. The swivel idea sounds good. It can't be too tall cause it's harder to move it side to side.

This hoe has 2 years of use on two stoves.. All metal, bought it I believe at Home Depot.. You can see the paint hasn't even burned off. About 31 inches long,, works great.. No heat near your hands at all..

yeah, it was primarily a joke, but with two intentions, most of us (I would imagine) are of the creative or re-purposing types, so either one would see the simplicity of getting a rectangle of steel welded to a metal rod, or that it's just a matter of there likely is something somewhere that is just the ticket or could be with a little modification (maybe someone bent out the end of a curtain traverse rod and uses that, cut the handle down of an ice chopper, bent the end of a grass whip or stuck a handle into a pastry scraper (like this one http://www.amazon.com/Norpro-577-Stainless-Scraper-Chopper/dp/B000SSZ4Q4)

actually thought about the pastry scraper. Also considered all my hoes to see if any would work...I have lots of different types of hoes, but...think I'll likely visit a blacksmith. This tool should be used a lot, hopefully over a long lifetime, so it's worth having what I want.

Big Green Egg makes an ash tool that is similar to what I think you're looking for. I have one for my egg and it works well for its intended purpose.

on second thought, just imagine the chaos I wreaked upon the universe planting the idea of a scrap of conduit or copper pipe, a couple of set screws, and a missing pastry scraper from the kitchen drawer. Good thing I didn't suggest a snowmachine trail marker sign or we'd have skidoos flying through the air and taking shortcuts through people's front rooms.
