Hello All

I'm in the process of connecting a Severn non boiler stove. My question is about the grate system. It has two pans or a set of fire bars. The previous owner told me the bars are for coal and the pans for wood.
That seems backwards to my way of thinking. Can anyone confirm which is correct?

Bars are definitely for coal. They are great shaker grates.
When I sold them they didn't have pans. They burned the wood on the same grates. I suspect the pans help with a longer burn.

Thank you webbie. I will try the pans first as the bars are showing their age.
