Barefoot a distant first. New England pellets are ok, so are the ligs. In my experience with the last two heat output was average with ash output being average as well. I burnt 5 bags of barefoot pellets last year and got 3 tons this year, I liked them so much. Hot, and below average ash.

Some of those are the same brand.
NEWP and Green Supreme
Lignetics and Pres to logs
Dry Creek and Timber Heat

Top three would be Barefoot, Dry Creek, and Lignetics

infernals?! dear god......
Infernals, :) I know. They were the first few bags I bought from my local Ace and then I started reading..... I will tell you they are only second pellet I have sampled so far (first was a softwood pine from the dealer I bought my insert from) and I don't see what all the fuss is about. It's probably because the Harman designedfeed system just churns the ash out but they wouldn't be a bad shoulder bag for my stove. Problem is they cost arund the same as Ligs and Barefoot so their def out!

Thanks everyone so far for the comments. I am very tempted to drive over into Mass and try and find some Sommers. I also wanted everyone's thoughts on a few more brands I am considering:

Currans- I found softwood bags and also a mix. Softwoods $254/ton and a mix for $235 with free delivery

Cubex super prem kiln dried $264

I also heard that the Green lettered Ligs are much hotter than the Prestos? Anyone ran both?

Thanks again and happy to be here!

Yep, that bottom feed design or an agitator would definitely help those Infernos.

They are the ONLY pellet I will not buy. At least right now. Perhaps they will improve and they will be worth another shot

I agree, although the PTL are decent and made by Lignetics too. The rest, as has been said....JUNK.

nah, don't agree......I was watching Antiques Roadshow the other day.....amazing what that "junk" is worth........

you, sir, are a pellet elitist.......kinda like the guy who shuns a porterhouse steak because its not Wagyu beef......"that porterhouse is JUNK......I only eat Wagyu, thankyou very much...."

So, quick update. I added a bag of infernos to what was left in my hooper from the stove dealer running the pre sale tests (softwood, I forget the name). When they made it to the auger holy crap what a change! I noticed it immediately by my medallion turning black, a weird orange flame, and the ash and pellets started overflowing into my ash pan within minutes. What awful pellets. Gonna try and bring them back. Thinking about trying the ptls next.

Anyone know what the closest place to try and get somers would be? I'm between saratoga ny and Bennington vt. Thanks!

Ok getting ready to buy my first ton. Wanted to save a little money since these will be my early season pellets and have a couple coupons for lowes. I liked both the Prestos and green team but it was liked 60 degrees when I burned them so who knows. About the same price......which ones? Buying this afternoon.

gt's have gone up in price most places... 279. presto's are the better buy if they are still 209/219

Thanks Brian. I didn't realize that the price went up on the gts. So my choices are timber heat 230. Prestos 230 or gts 275. Still thinking Prestos? I haven't tried the timber heats yet.

IMO, the Timber heats are a tad better than the PTL's. I'd get a split order of the TH and PTL's. I like the GT's a lot, but not at that price.

Yeah, right....that's why I have mostly all pellets from Lowes in my stash......and that does NOT include any Sets. Premier and Timber heat.

I dunno....only have to scroll up a bit to where ya say they are ...."JUNK"......other than the Infernals, I cannot agree that the others are junk.......

about to buy some pellets...this thread is helpful! Thanks :)

Why do I have to explain what I meant when it was so obvious.....here was the contents of the post I was referring to, and my response:

"barefoot, lignetics, dry creek, timber heat, all the rest (junk) in that order.

Understand now?? "the rest" was referring to Infernos, GS, NEWP, Instant Heat.........DUH.

Learn to read and comprehend a sentence.

I even edited my post to include PTL (as I didn't see them in the pic.... couldn't read the label and i'm unfamiliar with the bag as I've never seen them)

Just picked up my first ton! Went with Prestos from queensbury ny lowes. Paid $190 after $25 coupon and 5% off for using my lowes card. May pick up another ton this afternoon since I will need a total of 4. Still thinking I will go with barefoots for the other 2 at $255 per ton.

Think you will be happy with the P-T-L's and thats a good price for them !

I'm still lurking and taking notes...a lot to learn and between researching online and talking to different stores, I have a lot of info that is all jumbled. You guys are like the cliff notes version of the pellet world - like I said before, very helpful!

I'm super newbie, so please forgive if this is really obvious, but what I'm getting out of the cliffnotes above are:

  • Barefoot pellet are great, but expensive this time of year. I dont' even know where to go to find them - ctpellet is expensive ($300). Will check a few other places in the area (Western CT).

  • Other good ("non-junk") brands are, dry creek, timber heat, Presto (which I just figured out is the same as PTLs...different abbreviations, see...I told you I'm learning a lot), and lingnetics.
  • Inferno = bad

Still trying to figure out if green team, GTS, and GT are all the same brand with different lingo. Any anyone help me fill in this blank?

How am I doing? Am I kinda close to what you guys are saying?
