We spent most of our time cruising around at 2-3 knots. Quite a challenge for the planesmen. On one patrol, we kept going back and forth through this current (thermocline) that had a temperature difference of some huge amount that I can't remember. It always seemed to happen when I had the Conn on midnight to 6am! The boat would either sink like a rock or want to broach. 2 Knots just didn't cut it then!
Oh and yea to the presence of nukes. No, we didn't have any MIRV'S back then....... no sir. :) Just one warhead per missile. ;hm
When my east coast boat went through the Ditch and ended up in the Pacific, the Dive and CoW had a hell of a time figuring out what to pump out or flood in when going up to PD and then getting a good 1/3rd trim back down a 150 ft. MUCH different in the Pacific at least between the Ditch and Mare Island Naval Shipyard for damn sure.

There evidently is a 'Gulf stream' (so to speak) off the coast of Viet Nam or thereabouts that drove us nuts. :) I always did the satellite fixes on the 12-6 watches at PD too. :(

(sorry again for all you non-sub people out there - but when we find a fellow submariner, we can't help but talk amongst ourselves!)

I don't know if the following was true, but it was a story which was floating around on the 646 back in the day.... Back in the Atlantic, we had a Britt submariner riding with us, and one morning while on the conn at pd, he reported to the QM, "Quartermaster... mark the hour of sunrise..." just as the captain was entering Control. The captain asked, "Officer of the Deck, what's the visibility?", when the Britt replied, "About 93 million miles, Captain"

Welcome to the "madness!" Great choice on stove, pellets and seller. Both my "Twins" came from the Post. Thank you for your service.

Thanks and I'm enjoying this site - very informative in a nice, casual (sometimes very funny) and polite way!

Did you purchase the Barefoot Pellets from them too? If so, how do you like / not like them?

The "Twins" love the Barefoots as they burn hot an clean. I grabbed 5 bags from the shed last night and am running them now that the temps are falling. I didn't buy them at the Post. What are they getting for price? You might want to check out CTpellet.com as they currently have them in stock for $299. Scott is a regular poster here who carries very good stuff! Many of us buy pellets toward the end of the season (Feb-April) as the price can drop due to retailers dragging out their spring goods with the wane of the heating season. In a pinch, you can go to HD and grab a few bags of either the Stove Chow or Fireside Ultras, this year about $219 a ton (you might get a military discount, be sure to ask). Both of these put out nice heat, though more ashy than the Barefoots. I do a quick vac every morning with Power Smith (on sale this week at Benny's for $69) so the ash is no big deal for me. The Castille runs on a thermostat and I check it daily to make sure I have a nice clean pot and the hopper is tanked up with pellets. It sucks coming home to a cold house and my Queen looses favor with me. ;)

I know I picked a heck of a time of year to purchase a stove and pellets, but my Jotul F3 wasn't doing me much good as a hearth ornament which my wife totally refused to touch when I'm not home... I was quoted a price of $299/ton plus delivery (will be delivered with the stove... and promised that he had a supply on hand). I did use CT pellets for my Envi 8's (which I would purchase during the summer). I will check places around Spring for pre-buys of the Barefoots (a lot of places seem to be out of stock with them already).

My XO went on to the Halibut to do the snooping made famous in 'Blind Man's Bluff'. He was just at our reunion a couple of weeks ago.

My boat (Pogy) was the one that followed the Russian Echo as depicted in Hunt for Red October. We were mentioned by name in the book but didn't make it to the movie.

Wow - fascinating when you think back to those days... how young we all were! I arrived on the Madison at 21, and on the Grayling at 23 (did a split sea tour). WE all did a hell of a job - a dangerous job - and did it well. (and of course nothing better than getting your fish - I have a 'dolphins' tattoo on my arm)

I got to Pogy at 20. I have a 2 foot set of dolphins over my garage door.

And the real shame is that 99.9% of the people who see them have NO IDEA what they are or what we did for them!

Try maintaining PD in 30 foot seas in the middle of a Russian fleet.

Absolutely right. Seems like every sailor these days is wearing a pin the resembles dolphins. Kind of diminishes the importance of them.

As a Christmas present to myself, I'm going to have "Forty-One for Freedom" written (tattooed) around my dolphins. You are correct though - 99.9% of people (non-quals) have ZERO idea of what we did, where we went... and to what lengths. But on that VERY rare occassion you meet a fellow brother of the phin, THEY know what my tattoo is of... and that is all that matters!

Need to start a "good old days in the sub" "conversation" group guys. Clogging up the forum room with stuff that doesn't help folks burn stuff. And a thread that sets a record for "off the rails".

Speaking of the '41-boats'... which one is that a picture of? I'm guessing by the height of the fairwater planes, you were 'early' in the lot. (nothing better than being qualified lookout and being the first one up to crack the hatch after 70+ days, even before the OOD got there - or standing on the fairwaters when stationing the maneuvering watch.

Agreed - ok ok :)

I expected you long before now!

Gotta close it before I get tempted to start a helicopter jockey thread or Rick starts a carrier thread or Jags starts a flight deck thread or Daksy starts an artillary thread or... ;lol
