Burning Hunk

Had some 8-year dried slash pine pinus elliotti in storage and thought I'd trying burning it in the Drolet Savannah (1.6 cu.ft.). Never burned pine for heat because of the availability oak and pecan in our area. My first wood heater was one of the old oval Ashley wood heaters and they would just burn about anything wet are green. Our next wood heater was an old insert that was installed in a hap-hazard way from a previous home owner, i.e., no block plate or liner. Remodeled our home and combined the living, dining, and kitchen into one room and removed the transome above the hallway door. Installed the heater in a central location away from any outside walls. Six feet single wall pipe up to the chimney collar and twelve feet of double wall insulated pipe through the ceiling and roof. Cut the pine to ten inch lengths and loaded the stove in a north/south orientation. Gradually reduced the primary air completely closed. Amazing burn with no smoke. Burned four hours before reloading on a hot bed of coals. DW commented "that is a nice fire" . Good to know that these new high efficiency wood burning stoves can burn soft woods in a pinch.

I've been grabbing as much pine as I can recently. Puts on quite a show in the stove. When dry and mixed with hardwoods it cant be beat. It also make the best kindling or restart wood.

I love burning with pine by itself or mixed with hardwood.
