I suppose the plate could still be pushed back out of place. I thought you were lifting it straight up.
I vaguely remember some type of change with those retainers at some point. Maybe not?

It's tough to explain. You reach into the bypass with your palm up. Grab the top with your fingers and raise the hand away from you in an "up yours" fashion.

Oh by the way I finally measured the pipe and I only have 12'8" of draft going on. I think insulating will help but might also have to extend the chimney a bit. Thoughts???
I ran 12 ft last winter without a problem. Seems like most were at 15 ft, and i see now 15 is recomended.

AFAIK they have been 12 ft minimum system height for years. Not sure why the change.

Dam it. That time already.

Been running my BK for a few days. Super dry wood and no fans is producing 24hr burns.

Dam am not ready. Too early.

There are metal brackets that mount in the catalyst housing, the cat slides in after those are in place. They have tabs on the bottom that keep the bypass plate from being knocked out of place. That's how I remember it anyway, I don't think the older models had this feature. I can't remember for sure, I so rarely have to remove a Blaze King cat.

IIRC, I think I read BKVP mention that the newer stoves don't have these. Probably in one of the last two monster threads.

My (former stove) and my sister's both have them, built in '05 & '06.

I tried this on a Princess I cleaned yesterday, I did not work. I could get a few finger tips in there, but not near enough room to work. I pulled the pipe to expose the mess that was sitting right behind the cat. That bypass plate ain't budging! It's 3 years old.

This thread is already up? My AC is still on high! I look forward to seeing how the Ashford performs this winter with better seasoned wood! Though I was very pleased with it last season. I burned almost half the wood I would have in my old furnace and the house was much hotter! The In-laws even bought an Ashford mid season because they loved how well mine heated.

Hello all.

First post here. Looks like I'm in the right spot.

Was gonna post one of the typical "Which stove to buy?" posts looking for all sorts of advice. You know what I'm talkin' 'bout....

but deep down I KNEW what I wanted and what I wanted to do....so yesterday I ordered 2 Princess Parlor stoves...one for the house...and one for the new garage/shop I'm building at present. Yeah...those LONG burn times sucked me right in!

The one in the house will replace a VERY old and tired "Buck stove" insert. Actually...I'm doing away with the fireplace/cheesily-built chase and will soon replace all of it with a wall of glass...and I will be installing the new stove on the opposite wall.

And even though the Princess may be overkill for our small-azz/humble little dwelling....I was fighting that "too small of a firebox to burn all night" syndrome looking at all of the stoves that were rated for around 800 sq ft. I mean...if I want to get up and restart a fire I can do that with the Buck Stove! (will have coals in the AM if all you use is oak) My hope is that the Princess will be able to be throttled back a bit more than the (kinda runaway) Buck stove. (which seems to have a mind of it's own)

But hey...at least when >I< use it I put gaskets on the doors BEFORE I did. The previous owners seemed to forget that gaskets are used and stuff.... yikes! This thing musta ran full-tilt 24/7...... pretty sure there's a crack in it somewhere...unless..that is...these stoves were known for allowing a small bit of smoke to escape during operation. Either way....there's a small hint of smoke smell in the house when you turn on the blower....and overall.....the stove has seen better days.

Enter BLAZE KING. LOL. This should be fun.......

I think I got a decent deal on these stoves. (only a bit of Vaseline was used) By buying 2 they gave me 20% off the entire she-bang. With full rails/sides/shields and blower fans on each...including sales taxes....they came in at right around $2600 each.

FYI....I live in the hills in Colorado. We have pine/spruce-juniper/maple/alder/cottonwood and gambel oak on the property...so those are the woods I'll be feeding these stoves. It will be interesting to see how much wood they eat compared to the Buck. (used only on weekends til now 'cus we just moved here full-time in June)

The dealer said the pumpkin carriage should deliver the Princesses to Denver by the end of next week. Gotta come up with a hearth pad and all of the piping/etc before too long.... Anything I should be aware of/know as I wade through all of this? The plan at present is to find an installer to put in the pipe/etc.... but here in the hills it's often a tough chore to get anyone to show up...especially when they aren't making a sale because you bought merchandise off the Net/from someone else rather than from them. We will see. Maybe stove guys are different? (sure thing)

Either way....I have a feeling we will be nice and cozy all winter. WAS looking at boilers but all of the problems AND the fact that the burn times are often shorter made me realize I'd be a slave to one of those units and would likely burn FAR more wood to meet the same end. Besides...I've ALWAYS wanted a BK...or TWO.

Thanks for all of your insight to date. (that search feature does work...LOL)

BURN!

Looks like I won't be the only one burning two new BKs this fall...

True, but you have a bit more heating challenge than MtnBURN. I'm curious to see how you end up balancing heating needs and burn times. Also interested to see how you manage to cut down those 20 cords of firewood ... got a bit of that to do myself ... hoping you will come up with a good solution I can benefit from.

Since it was raining today, I decided to go check out a BK in person. Did a dealer search and found a shop about 27 miles from where I live. Called first to see what they had in stock. Here was the conversation:

ME: Do you have any Blaze King freestanding wood stoves in your show room?
Salesman: Um, not sure. Hold on, I'll check. (two minutes later). No, we sold our last floor model. But, we do have the Broil King Keg.
ME: OK, thanks.

So, which of these BK's do you like? ;lol

Was it Storey in Jackson? I bought their last floor model five years ago ;lol And it was five years old.

If you've never used a Kamado style cooker, you should.

For my first post to the forum, I hold all of you responsible for my obsession with Blaze King stoves. Despite having a friend who is a long time wood burner recommend a non-catalytic Pacific Energy, I was convinced by the passionate, wise, and enthusiastic people on this forum (that's you guys).

Stove guy is coming to check out the house on Monday. I am looking at the Blaze King Princess for our approx 1200 sqft house (single pane windows), and built in 1920-ish. If you couldn't tell, I live in Portland. I just moved up here this year, so haven't seen much rain/cold yet, but apparently that is supposed to come. 2 cords of wood have been drying in the back yard, since April...hope that will be enough.

Based on reading through last year's performance thread, it sounds like I should use double wall pipe to maximize the draw. Any other tips?

Just to tell you how obsessed I have become, I built a cardboard simulation of the stove to get an idea of size and placement for our living room.

Cheers.

That's ridiculous! I assure you BK is working hard to address this issue. There is no excuse for such ignorance...

I want one of those kegs!
