As promised ... The new hearth with fire

So there was this thread where my new hearth was OK, and then it wasn't, and then it was again: turns out I was lacking some key information about why we needed ember-only protection and I had a moment of panic, but all is good now.

So, as I promised, here are the pyro pix.

First: the finished product, with and without dancing princess

Thanks, all. What is really cool to me is that we used stone from the creek at our farm. It is not exact but a VERY close match to what was there, which I suspect was quarried very close by. I believe a couple years of wear and exposure will bring them even closer together.

Another good point was that the existing hearth was pretty rough around the edges (and in the middle) so our skill in executing the project was up to the task.

By the way, moving that sonuvagun was quite the project itself.

I really was not looking forward to redoing all that. I am so very glad to have discovered that I did not have the problem that I thought I might have had.

My MIL, co-owner and part-time resident at Lyndenbrook Farm, dealt with the seller and the chimney guy who redid the crumbling liner and advised us on the hearth. I did not realize at first that we had the long-leg version (orginally sold as short-leg and later upgraded). The input I got here was regarding the short-leg version at first, and when I told her about it at the outset neither of us knew that the other was discussing a different version. Mass confusion and no little concern.

Now a big relief.

The stone surface has been only warm to the touch with the hottest fire I've had going yet, although with the mild temps I have only been running break-in and smaller fires. I will keep a lookout anyway.

Oh so your just around the center of Ohio area... I am at the center of Ohio or at least the town on my addy is the center of Ohio... I actually live several miles outside of town. Used to be able to just type 'Ohio' on google maps and zoom in all the way and you'd be looking at a place about 2 miles from my house... but the last few years it seems to point elsewhere now. Not too far from ya though. I'm looking to move, want some woods (some reasons which should be obvious to folks on this forum ) but so far no luck. Land my way still way to damn expensive. Found one place this side of Cardington that was a maybe but still looking...
