I recently obtained a Husqvarna 162SE from my grandfather. This is a saw he used for heavy commercial use for a few years in the early 80s, and then for light to medium use for the following 20 years.

The saw has always been well maintained and still runs great (starts in 1 or 2 pulls). Having said that, the two large buffers in the front are completely worn out.

I found the original part number for these to be part #501 27 63-01 on Page N of http://www.ereplacementparts.com/husqvarna-162-198002-chainsaw-parts-c-114486_114487_114920.html. In the end I ordered part #651838 from www.hlsupply.com which is listed as a replacement for the part I need (part #501 27 63-01).

I received the parts yesterday and tried to swap out the buffers but unfortunately they don't seem to be the same. The one I ordered has both a female thread on the outside and a male thread on the inside, whereas the buffer I removed from my saw only has a female thread facing the outside of the saw.

I found that I could probably make the new part fit by simply cutting the male thread from the rubber, but I'm not sure if that's prudent and decided I should ask some wiser folks first.

I hope I've clearly described the problem. I'll post some pictures of the parts tomorrow and post them as well.

A quick update.

After inspecting the buffers, I realized that they also had a male thread but it had over time separated from the rubber. I was able to remove them with pliers and get the new buffers installed.
