Does anyone know the dimensions of the high valley 1500 firebox . It says 2.5 cubic ft and a 21 inch log but im thinking the north to south measurement must be short.

Judging from the firebrick panel in the manual page 16 it looks like it is 21" wide and 18" deep. You could load it either way with 18" splits but for 21" it will be E-W.
Out of curiosity: Did Stoll confirm that it is ok to install the insert in a prefab fireplace?

I called and no straight answer, well ...... maybe depends talk to firemarshall .... its done alot in some areas. .... its different from county to county... its a liability issue like many has said her before. I really don't want to go this direction every time i have a question. Does anyone know how big of a log i can put in North to south.

Honestly, I am not against putting an insert in a prefab, just like to point out the pitfalls to the owner that they can make an informed decision. Nevertheless, when doing that I would certainly look for an insert that explicitly says it has been approved for that kind of install. It would suggest to me that they did at least some kind of testing whether that's ok. You are really walking on thin ice liability- and safety-wise when neither the fireplace nor the insert manufacturer agree with your application. Plus, with quite a variety of inserts on the market that allow it I don't know why it is neccessary to choose one that is ambiguous about it.
Have you looked at the brick pattern? The firebox is 2 rows of bricks deep with each brick 9" long. Thus, 18" may just fit but could be pretty tight. Not sure if you will get a better answer. The High Valley is very rarely mentioned here probably meaning very few owners of one are active in the forum.

I doubt a 21" log will come even close to fitting NS in that stove. I have a 2500 and need have to load anything over 19" or so EW, last thing you need is to try and stuff a log in a hot stove and only find out it doesn't fit when you hear the thud hitting the back of the stove with 2" still hanging out the front. EW though I can fit slightly longer than 22" logs easily but even then I try to keep them 16-18" for easier loads.
