I got a new Harman PB105 installed by the Dealer in Setpember.Everything was working fine, had burned thur about a ton and half of pellets (Have 9 ton stored in basement very dry.)
I clean it every half ton completely. About a week ago heavy dark smoke started coming out of the flue. Then one night a HUGH Explosion come from the basement . The O2 sencor and smoke alarm was going off. The Harman exploded Letting out gas thru the saftey door in the front bottom of the boiler little dust. I called the Dealer (who is great so far) can the next day
ran some test an replaced the Fan moter couldnt tell me what really cased the explosion, everything is running fine again. Other then the explosion I love the way it preforms. Now watch it very very much!!

Well,

I'm confused. Your PB 105 exploded, but now it's running fine? Could you please give us more information.

I used to have the same problem and it was due to having too many pellets in the burnpot during ignition and a weak ignitor. What's happening is the pellets located on the ignitor are being smothered by other pellets and they start to smolder and the gasses build up and when they pellets finally ignite it causes the gasses to explode. I suspect the times the boiler doesn't explode during start up you are seeing a ton of smoke.

Check your ignitor and count the fins on it. If it had 13 then you have the old style 250 watt ignitor. Replace it with the 306 watt 15 fin ignitor and reduce the amount of pellets being fed into the burn pot during start up.

You control the pellet start up amount with the first 3 dip switches on the control board. I have my board set up with the first two switches off (in the down position) and the 3rd switch on.

Once I changed my settings and replaced the ignitor my explosion issue went away.

where are the fins and dip switchs located . I took off the bottom panel and can see the ingnitor and board.

The DIP switches are located in the upper Right hand corner of the control board. The fins are on the ignitor and you will have to remove the two screws located above the access panel you removed.
