ok... heres another question for you guys...

every year this starts around this time of year.... backpuffing .. when the stove is secured and the cat is activated smoke comes out of the secondary air ports into the house. when it starts to happen i get up on the roof and clean the chimney and the inside of the stove and the cat.. then the problem stops..

i thought it was the wood.. but the wood is mixed hardwood 1.5 years old......

i thought it was the temp i was activating the cat ( too early ) ..... i put a second thermometer on the stove

any thoughts .. any ideas...

Mine has backpuffed a couple times on me. Only seems to happen if i close the air off too fast or to far. Think i got it figured out now. Are you getting anything out of the chimney when you clean it? How often is it happening?

To be honest it started happening when I switched from ceramic to a steel cat. I think. I'm not getting a lot from the cleaning. But There is a little ( little ) accumulation. My father hasn't cleaned his chimney in many years. I do mine at least 1-2x. And I burn better wood than him.

What kind of stove is this? I don't see it in your sig. Could be the smaller cells of the steel cat are plugging up faster if there isn't a good protective screen in front of it.

i have an earth stove 1003c.. its an older stove but works great when clean. i am not using a protective screen on the cat.. the ceramic had a large steel outer shell.. i was told by the cat distributor no to use the steel outer shell with the steel cat......HMMMMMM> any ideas.
