Well, I bit the bullet and got the Huskee 22 ton logslitter from TSC tonight. I got there and they were chaining them down for the night. Tried to talk the manager down, but he was set on $999. So I said OK, he said you go pay and I will hook it to your truck. I asked about the fluids and he said they had not put the fluids in but had the factory box with engine oil and hydraulic fluid. I went in and got a 2" ball for my Kawasaki Mule and paid for the splitter. $500 tonight, and will pay the remaning $580 at the end of February since I have the 12 months/no interest on the TSC credit card.

I towed it home about 13 miles, unhooked it and put it in the garage. After we got the kids to sleep, I went back out and checked all the nuts and bolts. I put the engine oil in, then put about 3 1/2 gallons on the hydro fluid in the hydro tank, then put some non-ethanol gas in it, primed it 3 times, and it fired on the first pull. I started cycling the ram, the first cycle was a little jumpy while it purged the air, but was running smooth at the end of the first ram extension. I cycled through about 6 or 7 times, idled down for a minute then shut off. I then topped off the hydro fluid, it took probably 4 1/2 to 4 3/4 gallons.

I can't wait to start plowing through some wood!

Hey Mudbug, I bought the same splitter a little over a year ago.
I love it! Has never given me one problem.
You are gonna love it. Easy to change the oil too.
Have never come across a piece of wood that it won't split or cut through.
Even the biggest rounds, 24 inches long are no problem.
Splitting vertical is awesome.
Enjoy.

Congratulations mudbug!! You've got yourself a real gem of a machine. It's a work horse. The SpeeCo products are very good IMHO. And you just can't beat the price per quality.

happy splitting. hope you enjoy it, nothing like a piece of equipmento make it easier on you.

Enjoy the new splitter! One of my favorite things is getting my 'system' ready, and splittin' wood. I enjoy everything that much more when I have the right tools.

Congrats, mudbug! Glad to hear you pulled the trigger. I think you are going to be very, very happy!

BTW, what kind of engine oil and hydraulic fluid did they ship it with? What brand and viscosity? I bought mine from TSC a couple weeks ago but they set it up before I picked it up. I'd like to top it off (and eventually change them) with the same type.

Use SAE 20 Hydraulic fluid & 30 weight oil. 10/30 or 5/30.

I will check when I get home. It came in in Speeco containers. I was kinda glad they had not already added the fluids just so I could know exactly what was put in.

Engine Oil was Speeco SAE 30, and the hyrdo fluid was Speeco AW Hydraulic Oil 46. Hope this helps.

I tried it out this afternoon. Did not have any bigs rounds to put through , but did had a few smaller knotty pieces of red oak. It went right through it. It either popped or it just cut through the knot. It is still running top notch.

Thanks mud (and Caz).

Glad to hear the first splits went well. Seems the hardest thing about getting a new log splitter is having enough stuff around to split!

Congrats
I like the wedge design & the cradle beam.
Mine has split everything I've put on it.
SAE 30 should work fine in our area.
Should do you a good job for many years. :)
