Can I hook my fireplace up to my VisionPro IAQ?

I have a Waterfurnace currently hooked up to the IAQ. I've recently added a ZC high efficiency fireplace (RSF Opel 3) with thermostatic control and the central heating blower connected to the heating plenum (well, soon to be anyway, the installers are booked next week to do that hookup plus final finishing). The fireplace has its own thermostat which I'd like to remove since I'd like to hook it into the IAQ.

The goal would be to use the fireplace for primary heating and relegate the waterfurnace to backup status (it has an electric backup so I guess that would become a third backup in terms of the whole system?)

Anyone know if this is possible to do?

Way over my head..what's a waterfurance..boiler?

I'm guessing that this refers to a Honeywell TrueIAQ or similar device? I think the answer is no if that is the case. The IAQ senses the room air temperature. The fireplace thermostat senses the firebox temperature, not the room temperature. It controls when the blower comes on/off in respect to how hot the stove is. I would also guess that it is a line voltage thermostat, not a milivolt control. When the fireplace is hot, you want the blower running. If less heat is desired, let the fire die down or build a smaller fire.

If the IAQ is also connected to an airconditioner, be sure that it's set to heating only mode or the AC will come on as the room heats up.

Honeywell VisionPro IAQ. I have the optional thermostat kit for the RSF which puts an actual thermostat (ours is in the MBR) on the wall. It will turn on the blower when the temp gets too cold. It could be located in the fireplace rm and set to turn on the blower when the room gets too hot, but we want to use it for primary heating, hence the standard setup. There is a thermostatic switch in the fireplace that does shut off the blower when the firebox gets too cool (it's actually about 5/8" from the firebox so it's not reading the direct temp). I can check if it's line or millivolt control. I suspect the latter since there's a good sized relay in the basement nr the blower fan.

I always set the waterfurnace (geothermal heat pump) to heat only in the winter.

Well, that might work then. It sounds like you have the infrastructure and knowledge to give it a try. I haven't read the manual to see but my concern is that the wiring for the primary is complex in the sense that it is set up for both AC, filter, Heat and maybe even outside temp being reported from the primary source. Usually the secondary source wiring is much simpler because it is just back-up. Like heat only. You'll have to go over the manual for the IAQ and review the schematics to see how versatile the backup is. If it's a duplication of the primary, then perhaps your idea could work.

PS: I looked at installing a waterfurnace in our house. How long have you been running it. How has it worked out so far?

You may be able to hook the fireplace up to your vision pro provided its not line voltage. However, ive never seen a stat that will allow you to delegate your heatpump as "backup" heat. Im not real familiar with the setup of the vision pro and without being there to leaf through it, I cant help much.
