I can't believe the sad phone call I just got. One of my wood cutting buddies just passed away from a sudden heart attack. He helped cut some of the wood I'm burning now, and some of my wood for next year. He's the one that owned the wood splitter I borrowed earlier this year about 3 times. Man, I am so bummed. We were supposed to go to his house on January 1 for his birthday.

He just cut about 8 cords of oak on his property this past July.

Man, I'm at a loss of words. Sad day, just sad.

Sorry to hear about your loss. Unfortunately, it sounds very similar to a co-workers heart attack a few days ago...your not near Longview are you? Anyway, there's no easy way to get through it....remembrance and honor help.

Never an easy time, but this time of year even worse. I hope he doesn't have any young ones - sorry for your loss.

Very sorry to hear about your friend. I lost my best friend 4 years ago to bone cancer the day after he turned 44. Was sick for 5 weeks and gone; it really shakes you up and rocks your world and makes you think about life. And it was around the holidays which is even tougher like this situation. Again I'm sorry for your loss....'

You never know what life is gonna throw at you....

Life is always too short no matter what you age. Sorry for your loss, know how you feel 4 sure!

Steve,

My condolences to you, yours, and to your buddies family. Keep an eye and ear out for his family durning this time. Just letting them know you are there if they need something will help them.

That's horrible, how old? What was he doing when it happened? We also just had a friend killed on a motorcyle. Hard to believe how your here one day and gone the next, at middle age.

Sad news. Sorry for you and his family. Hope you all can help each other through this.

Terrible news. One never knows how much time we have on this earth.

Sorry to hear this . . . it's never a good time . . . but always tough around the holidays.

Thanks for all the condolences. Jerry was 79 years young, strong as an ox, and about the friendliest guy on earth. He acted and lived like he was in his 30's/40's. He lived on about a ~140 acre farm comprised of mostly of Christmas trees and forest land and a fishing/swimming pond. He went in for some physical therapy he's been doing (probably his back/hips from cutting wood and working the acreage) and the heart attack happened during this time. Swampy, I'm an hour and 45 away from Longview give or take. Sorry to hear about your co-worker.

Oregon Bigfoot.

When you throw a log on the fire be comforted by the fact that he's still here in spirit warming your home and family. So sorry for your loss.

Really sorry for your loss. My last 4 calls were for unresponsive, not breathing. No one doing CPR when we arrived. None ended well. Perfect time to resolve to learn CPR, the best way to at least give a friend or love one a chance at life. CPR started immediately can minimize heart and brain damage. Add the prompt use of an AED and that's state of the art today. There is only a 10 minute window from the time the person goes down, or less to act and most rural fire and ems systems rarely make that time. This is one area in life that you can truly make a difference. Be safe.

Heard a call this morning on the scanner a few towns over . . . 1 week old with CPR in progress . . . I hate hearing calls like this.

It is always very difficult to hear the news of someone who passes away at anytime and for it to occur during the Holidays is even harder. For those of us who also serve as firefighters it doesn't make it any easier to go on calls like that and not be able to get a better outcome. Worse is having to return back to your own family and try to continue on with "normal life". I still recall the Christmas morning of a CPR call many years ago...you just don't forget things like that.

Like Dennis said, you never know what time you have left here on Earth so take comfort that you at least had the opportunity to have known your friend and spend time with him over the years. It sounds like he was more than just a wood cutting buddy; he influenced a part of your life.

a real shame, steve. i hope the family is coping well. just lost a good friend also, last week. 62. cancer took him in a couple of weeks. remember him for the great friend that he was. art

Sorry to hear about your loss. God bless!

I know when I go, I'd like it to be fast. 79 is still early these days, folks are living longer. Sounds like he had a full productive life. I never want to be unable to care for myself and have prolonged illness as I depart. Lord, make me strong, but take me fast!

Sorry, Steve. Terrible news. Life is so short. Lately I have been reminded of that to often. Take care and God Bless.
