Finished one HH and 10 pallets stacked oak. Still got a good size pile. I think I'll make 1 more HH.

since I'll be looking at it for two years, might as well be pretty.

More.

I prefer straight stacking for it's ease. The HH's take alittle longer because you have to eyeball the splits alittle more.

nice stacks ...and nice hh...man thats alot of wood....how many cord?..and how many years?

I dont know what an hh is, but those piles there are a treat to the eyes. Really nice job. How much wood you got there, how ahead are you?

Nice job on your wood basswidow, looks like you have your heating needs covered for a long time.

Thanks Zap,

My kids call it a round house. HH is for Holz Hausen or Holz Meite? I don't know much about them either except what I learned here.

The far side is 15 pallets of mostly ash, BL, and Shag. That's next years wood and somewhere around 6 cords I think.

The oak is the year after and then some. The HH is on 4 pallets and is 7 ft from one side to the next and perhaps 5 ft tall. And 10 pallets of oak is probably 4 cords. Once I stack the next HH - I will be done for awhile. I think the HH's hold close to 3 cords.

All told - somewhere around 14-16 cords maybe? And this years 5.6 is stacked neatly in the garage.

This warm weather and lack of snow has really allowed me to get alot done, combined with the storm wood and free wood delivery from my tree guy, no complaints.

Merry Christmas and Happy 2012 you all!

Real nice work Basswidow! Looks great! That is a lot of wood for sure and I agree, when you get far enough ahead, it's worth stacking with some thought to the aesthetics - we have to look at those stacks for a long time! Cheers!

Impressive stacks and HH is very cool! :)

Looks a lot better than a propane tank out back!

Well done.

Nice job on the HH. I am building one myself. Will post pictures if it does not collapse.

Holz Hausen is German for "wood house". Here is a formula for the volume of a cylinder which can be used to calculate how much wood you have in a HH -- Height x Pi x Radius squared. Applied to your Holz Hausen, you have 7 x 3.1415 x 25, or 550 cubic feet of wood. Divide that by a standard cord (128 cu. ft.),you have about 4 cords of wood in your HH.

Actually I believe holz miete is German for "wood house" . . . at least that's how they spell it on the Germanic sites . . . of course for all I know it means wood stack or what have you . . . here in the US we tend to call them holz hausens . . .

Nice holz miete Bass . . . mine tend to tip in some as I go up . . . your HM is much better looking . . . and of course any serious member here at hearth.com is required to build at least one of these once in their lifetime. . . . and the more you build the easier they become to build.

That holz miete is a thing of both beauty and function. The stacks look to be about a mile long... good job!

Couldn't agree with you any more! Now that's funny.

Finished! Gonna take a break now, maybe. Shelby is inspecting my work. I think she approves! She can't wait to chase the snakes, mice, and chipmunks which will surely inhabit this fine structure by next summer.

Beautiful
You should never burn that wood, it looks so good stacked.
Now you need to get some wood you can burn, LOL

Great job

Thanks Jake, these are my second and third ones. This time, I did the work without the assistance of my kids and wife - so the lines are alittle straighter and the oak splits are like boards. They stack easy. Also, I stacked the shorts and uglies on their ends in the interior rather than simply tossing them in. My first one - I tossed them randomly in the middle and their weight pushed outward and caused a partial fall. Time will tell on these two. I am hoping I did well and they stand for two + years. As the wood shrinks, I hope it locks tight. I saved all the bark ends for the roof too and like the look.

I've been trying to get a transfer at work, but with no money in the budget, theres been no moves. Now that I have 3 years of wood, getting a snowblower and generator, my wife says we'll get a move. It would kill me to give this wood away after the work I put into it. I guess we'll just have to stay put for 3 more years!

Wow! The final stack pics are just awesome - work of art there! Definitely going to be tough to breakdown and burn! Nice job! Cheers!

Guessing the neighborhood kids don't use the hill nearby to go sledding . . . it looks to be a great start, but a rough end if sledding. :) ;)

The hill just beyond the pine trees is where they sled. If they don't stop - they get the house or deck. The front yard is really steep but lands you into a thicket and creek.

This is my side yard which gets full sun and wind. It is the best location for seasoning wood. The wind comes from the west right down the hill and thru the piles and the sun beats down on it for 180 degrees. Last year was cold and wet (record rain) and I thought for sure my wood wasn't going to be ready, but it was.

I'm still burning junk wood and saving my good stuff for winter should it ever get here - starting to run out of junk wood. I hate to burn the good stuff now. Still warm this week in the mid 40's.

Gunks, Thanks for the calculation! I figured somewhere between 3-4 per each. Good to know!

Every time I see these pics I keep thinking of The Great Wall of China . . . I mean The Great Wall of New Jersey. ;) :)

Gunks,
Your formula is right but the radius is 7 ft/2 - 3.5 ft. That means the base area is 3.5 x 3.5 x 3.14 = 38.5 sq. ft x 5 ft high = 192 cubic ft. for the whole holz hausen. Divide that by 128 cubic feet for a standard cord and each HH is about 192/128 = 1.5 cords of wood. My hh are each 8 ft diameter and about 5.5 ft high for about 2 cords each, which is why your calculation seemed odd to me. I was hoping you were right, which would mean I have a lot more firewood in the yard than I thought. Of course that would mean I burned a lot more last year than I thought and I'd need to collect a lot more this year to keep up, so maybe it turns out better this way.

Thanks Wood Duck for the reality check.

Gunk got the height and radius reversed, but his equation is good. The height is 5 not 7 and the radius is 3.5 not 5. So using Gunks equation with the right numbers equals your conclusion as well: (height) 5 x (Pi) 3.1415 x (radius squared) 3.5 x 3.5 = 192 /128 = 1.5 And 1.5 seems more to reason. It's just sitting on 4 pallets - it would need to be 10 feet tall to get 3 cords! So 3 cords total for both round houses added together!

Man you guys and those purty stacks! Its a freaking art form for some of you. I have no skill or ability to do that. My stacks look like the were done by a drunken, cross eyed ,halfwit and before any of you say it I know ..................."I'm not cross eyed" :)
For me I just stack em up and as long as I can't push them over I'm proud of them:) If I made a stack as nice as yours with those round ends I'd never want to dismantle it and would probably wind up buying more fuel oil:)
Well done

That is an impressive wood collection there! if I am this impressed, your non wood burning friends and family must think you are just plain crazy! I get all kinds of comments about my 70' of wood wall, but your wall is huge, and has castles on the ends!

+1. Most think I am nuts, and my stacks don't hold a candle to those.
