A friend of mine purchased a Drolet HT2000 wood stove. In the Owner's Manual under Tips on Wood Heating is the following statement.

"Remember that wood stoves produce radiant heat. Since heat rises, the use of floor
traps will greatly improve the heat transfer to rooms upstairs;"

I don't know much about stoves, and can't really find any info on floor trap. Any ideas?

Not sure what exactly they refer to but do consider that opening a path between floors may create a hazard should there be a fire. For that reason many code jurisdictions require fusible dampers.

I probably install a few dozen stoves a year and have never seen anything like that in a manual. Like was already stated, it is usally frowned upon to have open vents between floors. But sometimes Canada will have different manuals. ?

I did download the manual from their website, so it could be a Canada thing. He doesn't have plans to cut a hole in the floor or ceiling.

I think the manual is refering to a floor grate to allow heat transfer from floor to floor. Similar to a heat registers usally ( 4"x10" ).

He is going to love the HT2000.

My manual for our old stove said the same thing when I called the manufacturer to ask they said a floor trap is a through floor or wall vent not connected to actual duct work. I have one in the room farthest from the stove and it makes a huge difference in heat transfer by creating a draft to the farthest point of the house.

Good Luck
Pete
