I have an 1800 Center Chimney colonial house that has just had a pellet stove installed, the installer ran a 5" vent pipe off the back of the stove straight up the chimney and out the top, my problem now is that I no longer have the ability to close my flu or damper as it just hits the pipe so my Chimney is always open, I know I am losing alot of heat through this large gap. Is there anything I can do to safely close it off or pack around the pipe that wont catch fire but will effectively seal off that opening?

I'm thinking cement it at the top to keep cold air and critters from entering the space between the new pipe and the existing chimney. Get some welded wire fencing and cut a hole for pipe then slip it down into chimney to support cement while it dries/add strength.

I dont want to completely block it off at the top as the Chimney is still used for 2 other working fireplaces on the first floor and 2 more on the secong floor. I really would just like to seal the space where the pipe is bu keep everything above that open for the other fireplaces to use.

Do a search here on "Block off plate" or you could use Roxul insulation, or Koa wool insulation and just stuff it up there.

Is it sealed off with a plate at the top of the chimney?

I'm gonna step on some toes AGAIN & tell you to jam
unfaced fiberglass insulation up in the damper area
around your pellet vent. There is ABSOLUTELY nothing
wrong with doing it that way. No outgassing. No chance of fire.
No nothing - but keeping your house warm. I have done that
for the last 10 years with all sorts of vents - wood, gas &
pellet WITHOUT an issue, & the building/fire enforcement
authorities haven't pooh-poohed the idea, either.

Your not stepping on toes. Everyone has an opinion here. And I will be the 1st to say, Yes, you are correct. Most standard insulation is rated around 1,000*. So for a pellet insert, it may be sufficient. But a woodstove (in an overfire situation) will see surface temps and external flue temps (single wall) in excess of 1,000*.

So you are correct in saying it is o.k. I on the other hand am a worry wart and always like to exceed any CTC's or ratings and the insulation I suggested is about double what standard insulation is. All in what your comfortable with.

No need to think you stepped on my toes. We all have opinions and we are entitled to them. Thats the beauty if this place. So many different ideas and personalities. Something for everyone.

Jwild- How many burning devices go into this flue? Are they seperated by different clay liners?

Thank you both for the answers, for now I just put some insulation until I can craft my own block off plate, There is only one stove for now, and I rarely plan to use the other downstairs hearth, only when I have large gathering (thanksgiving, Christmas etc).

Also DAKSY thank you for being a Patriot Guard Rider!
