Here is good news , for those of you Rangely owners out there who are not happy with the fall away handle which comes with the stove. Jotul will supply a different design base which is offset . The handle supplied, screws onto the offset base . We think it looks better than a hunk of raw metal sticking out of the door.
We always had a fear that the dog would run off with the old handle when it was set down in order to load wood. She has a habit of doing things like that !
Thankyou Jotul !!

Where did you come across that? At first I thought the removable handle was novel, but now it's becoming rather annoying. I'm not crazy about how that looks, but from a convenience standpoint it would be adequate. Is it available free of charge or would I have to pay for it? I'm a cheap S.O.B., lol If that's the case, how much is it? Thanks!

Ugly as hell but i'm sick of mine rolling away.Tell us,tell us.

Yeah that looks much more convenient. The removable one is getting old fast.

I would suggest that you get in touch with whoever you bought your stove from and they can in turn get in touch with Jotul. It is available. We did not have to pay for it. I think they may be in the process of changing the design.
One other thing. This new handle arrangement does not get hot, which was the concern before.
The old design just plain sucks !!!!

While I dont mind the current handle thats not too bad looking

I really liked your idea for the wooden hanger for the handle , Scott , that you posted awhile ago. But when you want to just put a few sticks in the firebox , the only reasonable thing to do is to put the handle on the floor ( for it to roll maybe under the stove and possibly be inaaccessable ). To us it seems to be a safety question. The new attached handle is not going anywhere and the locking door mechanism still works great.

Rocky's in Augusta hasn't heard of it but they're gonna call Jotul and find out.

Does anyone know if this same handle fix has occurred with the 450 insert yet? I too am a bit miffed with having just a raw cast iron nub and the handle floating around on the hearth somewhere. Seems silly. A simple set screw would work fine!

Probably worth finding out if the ugly metal nub is a standard part that Jotul uses. I have a call in to the dealer, waiting on a call back.

I have noticed that if i unscrew the metal end of the handle it will screw right into the latch handle on the stove.Of course it would burn up if left on.Rocky's said that i can't have the price on the new stove or the handle until it goes on the market the 1st quarter of the year. That was from their call to Jotul.

Ugly as sin but I too don't like chasing my handle around the den. I don't think Jotul intended us to be front-loading the Rangeley as often as we all do.

Wish i'd waited for the 55.Isn't that how it works though?

I've had the F50 since fall & quickly became disenchanted with the removable handle. I found a brad, of the right size, allowed me to tap the handle onto the stub.
It hasn't come loose yet & the handle hasn't been hot. :)

I do not know what Jotul was thinking of when they designed this stupid handle. I guess since they have changed it, they have had a lot of complaints.

Does anyone have a picture of this little annoying handle? I'm just curious to see what it is that people don't like about it.

The older version of the Rangely F50 is what what we are referrring to when we speak of the stove with the " stupid handle". The door has a nice handle, but it just falls off when you let go of it. Then you are left with a metal nub which does get very hot to handle and it looks terrible.
I am including a pic of the metal nub on the front door. Also a pic of the handle which does not fall off on the side of the stove which operates the baffle for the front loading feature.
The very first post in this thread which I posted shows the new handle design which does not fall off and does not get hot.

Ahh, I get it now and can see how annoying it would be to keep track of the wooden handle as it could disappear easily. Thanks!

i think one of my old CDW stoves had a removable handle, actually it never stayed in....was a male end that went into a female receiver on the handles for the bypass lever and door latch. i think it had a little sheet metal holder down near the legs that attached to the bottom shield, if my memory serves me right.....seldom used it as i mostly put it on the floor or on a nearby shelf. you might think of fabricating a small little holder if rolling away is an issue.

I would just like a stationary handle but here's my temporary fix.

Breton, thanks for the close up of the front "nub". It does in fact look exactly like the one on the front of my C450 insert. Still no word if Jotul has made the same correction for this stove. Thanks.

I fabricated all my handles for my VC Defiant to replace the junk wood handles that were cracked and falling apart. I know not everyone has access to a forge and anvil but I plan to do the same for the new stove I buy if it is a NC-30 because I just don't like the look of chrome or that awful gold on my stove. I will probably do something a little fancier for the new stove but the old scool did not warrant it. They stay cool to the touch - or at least not to warm to use w/o gloves. Made the shovel, poker and tool hanger too. Planning to smash out a nice coal rake when I get around to it.
