Feeling the Heat
Dec 29, 2011
347
West Tennessee
Installed 11/14 and just getting to "know" it. I've been running nothing but Greenways (made very close to where I live) for 200 a ton. Heats my 1400 sq ft home perfectly in West Tennessee weather. Install and ton of pellets ran me $1964.

Anyone have a cab50 and "played" with the manual feed rate slide in the hopper?

I have found Sommerset pellets for 240 a ton. Any opinions on these?

Thanks guys.

In my Opinion. Somersets are better than Greenways. Buy a few bags and try them.

Are you measuring your output temps?

Welcome to the club?

Never crossed my mind to record temps.

Just switched to Somerset from lignetics after 3 years. More heat from Somerset pellets.

My CAB50 was installed in October 2011. I love it! I'm pretty happy with the heat output I got from Somerset, Hamer Hot Ones and Hardwood Heat (from TSC) - I have a ton of each stashed.
I'm currently burning AWF and Green Supreme as we're still in the shoulder season here in central CT.
I recall manually adjusting the feed rate slide in the hopper a couple of times when switching to a brand of pellets with different size than the ones I was burning prior.
Congrats and good luck!

How do you know if you to up or lower the feed rate

i've got the ps50.pretty much the same stove except for hopper size as far as i know.

i notice the flame on medium was pretty damn high.
so i just took it upon myself to close the slide as far as it will go.
i actually wish i could close it a little more.
may have to look into modifying it on the off season.

the feed rate can be affected buy the general size of the pellets you burn though. the mwps are for the most part kind of shortish.
a few long ones here and there. but generally shortish. your auger will deliver more pellet mass per cycle if the pellets are short.
in my case, i didn't notice a huge difference after i closed the feed gate all the way.
it trimmed the flame a bit. but i can't feel a difference in heat output.
imo it could definitely be reduced a bit more.
if there is enough excess in that slider, i may take a drill to the end of the slot to elongate it a bit.

you don't want a huge thick pile of pellets in the burn pot. and not too few.
you definitely want good air flow through what's in the pot as they burn.

mminton

Just unscrew the slide on the inside of the hopper. Pull to increase, push to decrease.

Funny thing about the height of the flame is it varies with different pellets. (from my limited experience)

The manual says the fire should be white as appose to an orange dancing flame. I have noticed that when the
color of the fire is white the stove burns hotter.

I am burning Mains choice, down to 1/2 a ton. Middle of that ton I'm getting a lot of clinkers>

Any problems with your CAB 50 how often do you have to clean.

Just installed cab50. cleaned the pot after 1st day of burn and chunks of pellets dropped into the ash pan. I lowered the feed rate by about an inch. Burned for another day and same thing. Any suggestions on how to stop this.

if you have chunks of pellets remaining in the burn pot, that isn't right.
do you mean pellets that strike the edge pot and end up on the floor of the firebox?
you will get a few of those from time to time.
but it sounds like you are saying there are unburned pellets in the bottom of your burn pot. (where the fire happens)

i'm having a hard time imagining how that would even happen unless the flame was exceptionally weak.

although, i will often get a few fresh pellets that drop down the chute when i am doing the cleaning. those that were just on the edge and ready to drop.
try to notice if some pellets get jarred lose and drop when you pull the cleaning rod.
that may explain what's happening.
it's hard (for me) to imagine any other way unburned pellets would end up in the ash drawer if the stove is burning normally.

if you could describe it a little more, the air flow experts may be able to help.

i really think your feed gate isn't the cause of what you are describing.
************************
btw- i have the feed gate closed as far as it goes on my ps50.
that gives me a flame on medium that doesn't extend much above the top of the opening of the chute where the pellets drop in.
typically you want the flame on medium to range somewhere between the bottom of that opening and the top of it.

i find if i open the feed gate much more, the flame on medium gets a lot higher pretty fast.
if i opened the gate a bit more, i could get more heat on medium. but i prefer to trim it so that i have some room to work with when i run on high.
the way i do it is i will run it on high when it's really cold out. but just long enough to bump up the room temp and to get the stove good and hot.
then i switch it back to medium.

the feed rate will also be affected by the length of the pellets you burn.
short pellets will cause the auger to deliver more total pellet mass per cycle as they fill more of the void in the auger channel.
longer pellets will leave more void space. resulting in less mass being delivered per cycle.

the mwp blend i have been burning has a lot of shortish pellets. so i keep the gate closed down.
that could be different if i was burning a longer pellet.
where you set the gate is based on how that setting ultimately affects your flame height.

they are pellets that have been burned and formed in the burn pot. You can see the holes that match the inside of the burn pot. They are hard but will break if you squeeze them.

pellet

ah. so they are "pellets" of ash then?
if the stove is burning properly, and it's just ash, then i think you are ok.
all the heavy ash falls into the drawer. and the lighter fly ash is what gets blown up out of the firepot and collects in the firebox.
it may just be that your heavy ash is forming that way. and keeping the shape of the holes it falls through.

lol. lemme go take a quick peek at the stuff in my stoves ash drawer. i never looked terribly closely at it... brb

Sounds like you're getting clinkers. What kind of pellets are you burning? Looks like your pic didn't come through.

but clinkers don't fall through to the ash drawer, do they?
i have never had a clinker though. so i don't know for sure.

it kind of sounds to me that that heavy ash is just keeping the shape of the holes of the firepot as it drops to the pan.

as you say, a pic would be very helpful.

He has another thread where he says they are three inches long and two inches wide. .

yikes! yeah. that's not right.

your question of what pellet brand he is using could be key here.
possibly air flow issues as well?

if he could actually close the gate a full inch, it was probably open way too far.(from my experience with the ps50)
it could it be that just way too many pellets at a time are in the pot. affecting the burn.
but he also said he closed the gate... hmmm

This a brand new stove, or used? What brand of pellets? Describe your exhaust system (size, lengths, elbows, etc, etc). Are you using an OAK?

If they are pellets that have been burned there either fly ash in the box or a harder ash in the pot. So what your saying is you have somthing strange in the pot_g . Are you cleaning your pot every day? Your flame should be 4 to 6 inches above the pot on high.

Burning Mcfeeters Premium Softwood pellets. Installed stove burned for 1 day and cleaned burn pot. Ash in box is approx 1/4 deep. More ash in box then in ash pan. Flame is good on high setting 4 - 6 inches. Pipe goes straight out the back and up about 12 feet. Used ICC 4" pellet stove pipe. I am trying to post pics but having a hard time new to the site any help with instructions would be helpful.

to post pics, what i do is i host them (use photobucket or some other free hosting site) then use the image icon here (the little tree icon just above the box you type your posts in) to insert the url of the pic. when you hover on the tree it reads "insert/edit image"

you can also do attachments directly from an image on your pc. but i don't see the controls for that.
some folks do it that way though.
