"Co-worker with an OWB told me that they are supposed to burn green wood in it! Apparently it does not burn well if the wood is dry - it must be freshly cut"

Well, that's obviously crap. The problem is that you burn so much it's tough to get a year ahead of your burn rate so that you're burning cured wood. I work my @$$ of to put up 14-15 cord for the winter, by the time spring comes around I'm about out of wood and ready start putting it up for the next year.
