Great pics Loon, snowing like blazes here right now.

Looks like you need a bigger lazy chair for those dogs!

Hey Loon,
A question for you. I had a Butternut fall on my garage this last snowstorm in October. I bucked it up and have yet to split it.
How does it split and if you have burned it, let me know how it burns.

i make sure to drop a few every year as they are very easy to deal with. they remind me of a light Maple tree but grow straight up for 3/4 than you get into the canopy.. very nice splitting for sure and can be burned within the first year without a problem..

I thought it was a walnut because I grew with with black walnuts all over my Dad's property - very similar tree with the bark and leaves. I think it is also named a white walnut?
After checking out all those oval nuts on the ground I found out it was a Butternut. I'll be splitting it up in next few days.
Thanks for the info.

The weather is supposed to be alright today Ictatip and will head into the woods and grab a Butternut with some pictures ;-)

took the one on the left down today and the lighter coloured trees in the picture are mostly Maple that are left alone on the whole property, except if they go down in a storm or are standing dead.

great splitting wood and i sure like the way it burns ;-)

Looks good Loon. I have one on our place and may have to cut it down. I've never burned it before so your information is great.

Looks like the same tree that fell here with the nuts and leaves. Thanks for posting the pics Loon. I'll be splitting the butternut with my maul. It looks a little stringy in your pics. Have you tried splitting with a maul?

Sure is beautiful wood. Lots of folk are putting in hickory kitchen cabinets. Real nice color & wood grain.
Hickory is a tough wood too. Many uses. I forget what Grampa used it for, shovel handles maybe, flexible & tough.
Great firewood too, I hear anyway :)

your welcome gang.

lctatlp i have only used the splitter on them, but you shouldnt have a problem at all as it just walks through it and the string doesnt come into play like the Elm string does ;-)

Savage the wood as it sits on the splitter is quite heavy but dries great within a year for sure. Bogy i have been talking to my buddy across the road and he said the same as you, they used it for quite a few different reasons back in the day ;-)

There are a few types of nut trees around here and i thought this one right behind Emma's head was a butternut for the longest time? but its a Pignut tree. cant find a better picture right now, the leaves and nuts kinda look the same in the above picture but are huge ;-)
