thanks for the info, I printed out coupon and went and got one, I have a HF store about 5 minutes from me. Nice to point it at the insert and check the temps, but I was hoping to be to shoot the top of my liner and cap where it comes out my chase, the laser light hits it but I guess it is to far away to get a reading

That unit has an 8:1 distance to spot ratio. You would need to get 4' away for the spot size to be small enough to only cover a 6" target. Any farther away and you will be including more area than the pipe takes up. Can you get within four feet of the top with a ladder?

This thing is great but the beep tone it makes every time you let your finger off the trigger is VERY annoying.
So I disabled it. If anyone wants instructions let me know. You just need a Philips and Flathead screw driver(or pliers) and 3 minutes.

I agree with you about the annoying beep, pm me the details on how to disable

Thanks

Its simple.

Remove the 'Danger' sticker from the right side of the unit. There is a screw under it you need to take out.
Take off battery cover, remove battery.
Take out the two Philips screws that hold the unit together.
Cut down the middle or peel back the sticker that shows you how to insert the battery.
now simply pull the unit apart starting from the bottom and it should come apart in tow pieces (not how the lanyard is attached for reassembly)
Once the unit is apart you will see the circut board. There is a round black plastic piece about 1/3" wide. It has a hole in the center. That is the speaker. I believe its located just under the trigger.
Use a flat head screwdriver (or pliers) to pop off the cover. You will see the seem about 1/4 down. Just pry it off. Now remove the metallic disc (the speaker). Reassemble.

Hi,
Will the laser thermometer penetrate the glass of the insert? It seems to me that it will only read the temp on the outside of the glass. Any ideas?
Thanks,
Chris

Why would you need it to penetrate the glass? You need to know how hot the coals are? My guess is that it it hotter than the range of the temp gun.

I guess this is my inexperience speaking but I thought that when people talked about the temperature of their insert they were referring to the temperature inside. I guess they are referring to the outside of the stove.
Thanks
