Finally got a decent price on the Englander 30 and pulled the trigger. Delivery this week. Thinking of putting it on the patio for cure burns. Any opinions on that? Want to get it into service asap, but don't want the stink all through the house. What is the best method for breaking in this stove?

Congratulations. The best way to break in the stove paint is with heat. It can be done outside with about 6 ft of pipe on the stove using good dry wood. If that's not an option, do it on a day when you are the only one home. Turn down the thermostat, open windows on both sides of the house. Put a fan for exhausting fumes on the downwind side. Get the stove up to 500-600F on the stove top. It will be all over in a few hours.

Installed the 30 in our home two weeks ago. The smell on the first night was a bit overpowering, but a fan near the stove exhausting air helped immensely.

My prediction: you are going to absolutely love this stove! I'm currently sitting in the family room wearing shorts and a t-shirt with a fan blowing on me.

It's currently 20* outside ... 80* in the family room (finished walkout basement) ... 75 in the upstairs hallway and bedrooms ... and 72 in the upstairs kitchen and dining room on the far end of our 2400 sq/ft L-shaped home!

Congrats. What kind of good deal did you get?
I'm looking to do the same thing and have been waiting to hear of something like was found last year.
I may be in the big city tomorrow and I'll take another look if I am.
Looking forward to hear how it works for you and of course, pics.

I used the web deal as a means of getting the additional discount, 10%. Web has free shipping at the same tag as the store; 899. Excited to get her hummin'

First pic of proof- off the truck!

Are you referring to the standard web price of $899? I'm getting ready to order, so if you know of a way to get 10% BELOW the $899 please let me know!

Give the store the option of selling the stove to you at 10% off, as opposed to you ordering online and getting the benefit of free shipping. It may be enough of an incentive for them to give you the discount and claim the sale. Of course you have to pick it up then.

About this time of year they start dropping, got a 30 in February 2011 for $669. I may grab a 13 this spring if i can get one for $500 or less. It was listed at $949 a week ago and is now down to $649 already at HD.

Update-

Put the 30 on the patio and lit er up. Put 6 feet of pipe on to work a draft. Temps were about 45 when I started.

Ran 5 splits in the load. Got the stove top to 625 and did plenty of paint curing. Going to put it in place tomorrow and run another curing load mid-day when I can open the doors/windows.

Nice!

I had every intention on using the pedistal on my install, but wound-up using the legs at the last minute. Either looks pretty good.

Great stove you got!

Bill

Thanks for the shirt B... I checked the bottom of the stove for the secondary air intake hole. Looks like it is the small rectagular hole, maybe 3 x 1.5? The only other intake seemed obvious to be the primary. A soda can sized intake facing rearward.

Legs came with the unit, and i think I may use them. Like to store the tools under the stove.

That's impressive that you got the stove up to 625 with just a stub of pipe. I think you are on the beginning of a beautiful friendship. Hope that's a smile I see on your face.

That's a dang good idea! Did Home Cheapo do that few ya?

Definitely excited to get this hooked into the system and see how it really behaves. I have already decided that a comfortable chair will be set up near the stove. Those rolling flames are intense to watch. I found it particularly cool to see flames on the ceiling with a 3 inch thick clean air space and then the wood which was not flaming. The ultimate outcome is to maintain the heat output I am used to, or exceed it, and see wood consumption drop 35% vs the Defiant. Cold days the Defiant eats a split an hour as an average.

In addition I think you will be loving the cleaner chimney and cleaner burn with the new stove.

Buy it used..LOL.. could not resist.

Congrats on a smart buy - you will soon be one of BB's disciples.

I am sure it will burn cleaner with the proper pipe setup. I did notice there was quite a bit of smoke as the fire started up. I had started the Defiant at the same time and kept comparing the two exhausts. The old D was cleaner. I am guessing the lack of draw was the cause of the smoke, so I am not to concerned.

Very nice - I am doing the same thing regarding going from an old Defiant to a NC-30 for next season and have been watching prices drop at HD.

What is your chimney set up? Did your old stove have a 6" or 8" exhaust? I will be going from an 6" on the 30 to and 8" stove pipe and chimney with an adapter. Looking for moe who have done the same and listiening to results.

Looks good

She's in! Installed the unit and set her on fire. Top was at 650 in 35 minutes. The stove pipe is 6 inch and has a vertical run outside of 23 feet. Draft has never been an issue. Timing the length of the first burn since that is 1 of the 2 reasons I jumped into this stove. The other is really the same thing, but measured in wood usage instead of burn times. The old Defiant was great, but ate quite a bit of wood on a daily basis.
