Finally the ground froze so I was able to do a little cutting this am. Dropped an ash, dead of course, and took these 2 smaller trees as well. I'm pretty good at being able to identify wood in the winter time. Kinda know what its not and go from there. First few pics are of this wood thats as heavy as a rock. Reminded me of maple but its definitely not soft maple. I tap sugar maples in the early spring , but those trees are really mature. No smell, white chips and HEAVY!
Second tree has lots of those dang thorns, had to clear room for the ash otherwise it would have stayed. No smell either in this wood as I thought it maybe the thorny apple that sav has mentioned before. Anyway, nice morning, seen 3 deer, got some free wood, and drank hot coffee. Life is great! :)

I've seen ash with that grain, it's usually big/old/heavy tree's that I see it in.

wishlist I live in Ovid near you and dropped a small ash last year I saw that same thing and couldn't figure it out till my coworker ( former loger ) verified it was ash. It is very confusing to me for such a small tree
usually its in bigger trees as rdust pointed out.

Both are good fire wood.
Great that no snow to slow you down (yet) & nice to get free fire wood :)
Nice score!

I think you and LEE are both right - maple (norway) and hawthorn are my answers.

Whatever type of wood it is you got it will burn :) . Sounds like you had a very enjoyable morning cutting, way more enjoyable than my morning of shuffling paperwork at a desk lol

wishlist, I thought I had posted to this last night but probably goofed it up. I can do that quite easily. I do believe you got a thorn apple for one of those trees (picture 4).

Smelling wood again, man I thought Sav had lost it, nice job.

zap

Sav lost it a long time ago zap.

Zap, the nose knows! Problem is when woods frozen it doesn't smell as pronounced as in the summer time, except for that large elm I got last year, man did that thing stink!

Sav, can't lose what you never had. Lol.....

Sorghum, it definitely has the twisted bark. Sounds just like you described if you hit two pieces together. For the size of the wood its extremely heavy. I've never ran across ironwood so I have no idea if its common in mid-michigan?

Headed to a saw mill tomorrow morning to get some free slabwood for the maple syrup evaporater. I'll take a piece of this wood and see if he can help identify it. :)

How much syrup do you make per year.

zap

Last year was just over 65 gallons. Fabricating a preheater for the evaporator so hopefully it will reduce the long nights ! :)
