Must have ran out thats when things get fuzy! Heck I cant even figure out the hot water thing. ;-)

Elm..hmm. Never saw or id'ed an elm. I don't have a pic of a split. It's a scrounge that's 15 minutes up the road. Wanted to see what you guys thought before loading her up. I was hoping you guys would say some sort of maple. If it's elm...I'm out.

My guess is Norway Maple. I have a lot of that, and it looks the same.

Why? Not all elm is the stuff you cuss at. Cut and split a round. If its not too bad, I would go for it. Elm make for fine stove chow once it is broke down.

No kidding. Monday I dropped 4 standing Elm snags from 4" to 15" diameter that were across east fence in a low wet (frozen that day) area in the public right of way next to gravel road. Some is great, some is marginal, all will be welcome on those 40 to 50 degree days.Tried splitting one of the bigger ones with the X25,after a few swings could only get maybe 1/2 way in at best.

No big deal. One of these days I'll break out the monster maul or saw 2 opposing shallow grooves in one end to start my wedges.Once it freezes a bit more should help out a lot.

I would say its Elm. The bark looks right and the light sapwood with a brownish heartwood is elmy too. I would certainly take it, since I take anything, but why not? Maybe it will be a little tougher to split than some other woods, but I haven't had much trouble with PA elm.

I still say it is maple. Just sayin.

Great scrounge though!!

Give it a shot. If it is miserable stuff then pass. But what the heck, you got a potential score within short distance.

At first glance, maple ran through my head as well. Looking at it closer, and assuming that those are relatively new cut marks, it appears that the heart wood is a bit dark for the softer maples. It COULD be a regional difference, but it matches the elm that I am more used to.

Fresh cut with bark on - I think it might not be too bad for splitting. Only trying it will tell.

Bark dont look right for Norway to me, so I join the elm band wagon and if you pass on that you need your head examined unlees you cant get it split.

Looks like some sort of oak to me - but what do I know? Split some and post again.

First thought OAK. If it's elm it would have to be Red Elm which should split pretty well and burns GREAT. But I will still say it is R. OAK.

I've been burning some dead Red Elm. It's da bomb! Tough to split, but they say the other Elms are worse. If you're man enough to get one apart, we would have a nice split pic. ;-P

Can anyone post a pic of some elm? What does it smell like? I like to use the smell test when scrounging.
