I was burning our paper and cardboard garbage in our fire circle today despite the windy conditions. As the wind picked up, I watched several pieces of burning paper blow toward two stacks of wood along the edge of our yard and into the hay field behind our yard. I kept an eye on the stack of dry wood and everything looked good. I went inside and ate lunch. After lunch, I noticed smoke coming from a stack of green oak. I checked it out and sure enough, three pieces were smoking and hissing. There weren't any flames and a little water was all that was needed to put out the fire. I pulled out one of the charred pieces and soaked everything. I couldn't believe that the green oak actually started to burn. I felt silly dumping water on my nice stack of wood but I wouldn't felt much worse if we would've let home and found that the entire stack had burnt to the ground. The next time burning paper blows out of the fire circle, I'll make sure that it is out before I walk away. (Don't worry, we are surround by hay and corn fields with no brush or woods.)
