Hi everyone, just wondering if anyone here has tried pellets made by T.P.Downey in Hillsbourough New Brunswick. A local company has them for 3.50 a bag (33 lbs) They say they last as long as 40 lb bags of other pellets, a selling pitch I am sure. I will probably grab 4 or 5 bags to try them, just wondering if anyone had any input on them. Thanks

I am 30 or so bags in and they are really hot. I heard complaints about dirtying the glass but I don't care to watch the fire...I just want mega heat and these pellets are really hot. Just for example,we are running 24/7 with these(unless we get a warm spell) and seldom put it above the lowest setting at 1 to 1.5 pounds per hour. The electric heat bill should be very low. Today, the stove is off due to a warm spell. The stove is in the basement(insulated) and the house(1 1/2 storeys) stays fairly warm. Not sure about the claims. Like the other pellets, try them and decide. I also keep the draft fully closed.

Ok thanks, I just picked up 3 bags today to try, they have 50 left and i need to fill my stove up, so I told them if i liked them I would call in the morning and pick up the rest, going to be cold here tonight so a good time to try, my other pellets dirty the glass also unless i keep it on 3 or 4 all the time, can usually run on 2 and it is comfortable. Thanks again.

I have been buying this company's pellets for 2 years now. First year they were really great and cheap(by the pallet 75 bags) Second year(this fall) I found the quality to be not so good, too much sawdust per bag. I emailed the company to notify them of my concern and to hopefully hear a response. So far, nothing.Website not working either when I tried to contact after no email.) Guess they are doing really well, with sales in excess of 1 million. My business is just a speck to these guys. I suspect when you pile 75 bags of 15 kg each(pretty close to 2500 pounds!!) on one little 4 by 4 pallet...you get quite a breakdown. I will look elsewhere next fall.

Sawdust sure, but what all of a cup maybe if that. Hardly a reason for me to be buying a product from Quebec or elsewhere. Sawdust isn't evil and burns fine along with the rest so theres no waste. Sawdust will look like a problem because it collects in the bottom of the hopper and accumulates over many bags. I doubt that the competitiion is much better.

Yeah, I wish it was just a cup...thats what it used to be . I havnt figured out how to take the auger apart if it jammed up, I keep a SHOP VAC beside the stove and vacuum each time before it goes into the hopper. I am getting a quarter of a gallon pail. Where are Shaws from, Quebec? On that topic, I wonder where my stove came from.

I don't where your stove comes from, but if you let us know what kind of stove you have someone could probably tell you. I have burned pellets from all across Canada and the U.S. and there is one thing I have discovered. They are made of wood and they burn. If the price is right and the quality is okay who cares. No one asks where the furnace oil comes from or the NG. I understand the government (Ontario) paid for a plant 60 miles away, the only problem is they sell the pellets in Europe. If it costs us less than oil lets rejoice.

Thanx, I got a Magnum biomass (fireplace insert)..No question, cheaper than oil and warmer heat, when i first bought the stove the installers were adamant about not getting sawdust to clog the auger because it couldnt feed the pellets then...When I mix barley with the pellets, i always have to sift the fine dust out...a lot of labour , but cheaper again than oil , even pellets. So the 1st 3 yrs it was great having the relatively maintenance free pellets, i am re-thinking(by evidence of this forum) maybe its not a big deal, let'er go and auger clogging is remote chance...like you say about oil, never again for an oil furnace and oil tanks (every 15 yrs...)and service , and 25 yr life for a furnace.
