Is it just me? Or does it really bother you, when your stacks get smaller. I actually hate it.

Yes and no. All the work getting burnt is kind of a downer, but then again less wood means less fuel bills.

It shows how time flys to me. As my dry storage dwindles, I know I have plenty of wood to replace it. So then I gotta fill that stack. I constantly need to find new spots to stack, to keep the conveyer belt moving. Over the spring I'm going to get a nice skid storage system going. So ultimately, the piles in the yard are the ones going down, and thats why I can't stop cutting wood.

It has taken me three years to get 2 seasons ahead. I just love the way the stacks look. My family thinks I'm losing it. But they love the heat. I tell my wife if she wants to work extra shifts to pay for the oil, have at it.

One of those love/hate things. Love that it's saving a bunch of money and keeping the house as warm as I want, hate that all the work I put into it is being burned up.
Love conquers hate.

I fondly recall when we had about 27 cord stacked up. We watched it shrinking for several years and yes, I miss that pile. But it also does not bother me to stack the wood in different spots.

I love it. Every btu produced by wood is a btu that didn't get produced with propane.

It's you. No point having a cake and not eating it. When I take a split off the stack, I look forward to the warmth it will give me, not lament it going up in flames.

As I move wood to the stove I constantly find nice splits that I think I should save for a really cold night, even when it IS a really cold night. It is not as if I don't enjoy burning it, but I know what you mean about hating to see it go. The fact that we are using almost no supplemental electric heat the past few days makes up for the tragic death of a few good splits.

I actually have more wood stacked and split right now than I had when I started the season in November. This doesn't include a black walnut I have down the road that is waiting to be split, which will be over a cord or the tree a friend had cut down or the scrounge my FIL just called me about.'

Nope . . . because I see the stack in the woodshed growing smaller, but the oil level in the tank staying the same . . . besides . . . I've got plenty of wood to replace what I've used.

Not so much this year... I just completed my first cord of 5 cords reserved for this burn season. Looks like I'll have a surplus at the end of the season :)

The pluses and minuses of seeing your wood pile go :smirk:

Nah. Whenever the weather's good (fairly mild here so far since mid December w/no snow) & schedule allows it,I'm in the woods 3-4 days a month cutting more. Not sure of exact amount, but have burned about 1/2 compared to this time a year ago.If it turns cold,we have lots of snow & stays there for a few weeks, that'll change obviously. Those 2 or 3 50/60 degree days during each of the past few weeks nothing was burned. So that helps the supply also.

WOW! That is a million dollar view beyond the wood stacks! With a view like that, I'd want the stacks gone.

Thanks guys. Like I said, pluses and minuses. It's always nice to see a good wood stack and great to know it has heated your home!

Smaller stacks for us has meant that the oil truck last came up our driveway January 2009, we still have 3/4 of a tank left.

When we feel the need for heat we feed the Liberty.

What I hate is the ground won't freeze. That means I cant get to the woods to bring wood home and make new stacks.
So yes it bothers me my stack is getting smaller and there are no new stacks.

Since childhood, firewood has always been a fun time so I actually look forward to that time as it means there's more room to stack and a chance to go wood gathering. On the west coast, if wood is not under cover, it will just rot! I put up 4-5 cords a year for myself and about 6-8 cords for Granny. But getting wood for Granny is a lot more fun. I collect the wood on the Vancouver Island side and take a ride on BC Ferries to Cormorant Island to where she lives. Being a small local ferry, there's always some one to swap stories with. Granny's wood piles.

Skyline, that's one awesome view of Mt. Hood!

While you were basking in the sun at your elevation, we were freezing our buns off in that same fog. My wood stove got a work out today, the high at my house was 37*, with 100% humidity, it sure seems much colder outside than a dry Arctic Blast.

Did you watch the Blazers flop in Phoenix the other night? What a joke. At least they beat the Cavs tonight.
