Feeling the Heat

I am out of town with the military for a few more weeks, but the wife is doing a wonderful job running the PAXO 25, but she seems to be noticing that its "not putting out the heat like it used to" when I first left about a month ago. The turbulators, dont seem to scrape the walls like I hear people say their EKOs do, or it might be the fact that its a Paxo 25, and it never did since it was new. So non the less, I think its time to pop the rear cover and run a brush down the tubes mid season.

Does anyone know the Diameter of the HX tubes, so I can order some brushes through grainger so I can clean it right when I get home. I am guessing its somewhere in the 1 1/2- 2 1/2 range.

Maybe I can rephrase this, if anyone else has bought brushes for their boiler, just tell me what boiler you have and what size you bought. They only come in 1/2" increments, so there are only a few options anyways.

Don't Know if there all the same but I'm guessing mine are 2" ID forgot to measure when apart. 2 1/2 seems to big
and 1 1/2 definitly to small.

That sounds like a pretty good guess, I am away on a trip with the military right now or I would reach in the lower chamber and get a measurement from below if I was home, I just wanted to get a brush ordered from Grainger so it would be waiting for me when I get home next weekend, if someone has done it before.

Thanks

Not sure what size but I bought 2" brushes for my Econoburn. It just touches the sides. I thinks 1/8 - 1/4" over tube sizes would give you a better cleaning. Maybe start with same size and then use a slightly oversized brush.

The EKO40 has 8-2" tubes or the closest thing metric offers. I bought a big heavy washer and centered and welded it to a 3' long 3/8" rod (cut a notch through one side of the washer to allow the rod to center up with the washer like a big wood blade drill bit) and trimmed the washer to fit down the tubes with about 1/16" clearance. Once the turb's were removed and my home made tool was in the drill I could clean all eight tubes in about 2 minutes. Clean tubes make a big difference in heat exchanger performance.

Not wanting to hijack the thread but, how long would those pipes be ?

Can't say I really ever took note but the rod was able to extend below the tubes so...

By looking off the paxo users manual schematic on AHONA's website, they extend from just below the flue collar to about 3-4 inches from the bottom chamber floor, so in the EKO/Paxo 40 they are about 40-42" if you are looking to extend outside the unit on a drill, its in the 48-52" range. The EKO/Paxo 25 is more about 6" shorter.

Thanks Cave2k, afblue. Just curious about the beast's nominal power/heat exchange area ratio.

Not a problem. Afblue got me wondering since it has been so long and I went and measured the tool I made and found it is 47" total and was made from 5/16" stock instead of 3/8". However it does extend all the way below the tube openings to the bottom of the secondary from the top with about 3-5 or so inches remaining above the tubes.

Great, that pretty much matches afblue's observations. I really appreciate the effort you guys put into answering questions, it sets this forum lightyears ahead of any other I have visited in terms of usefulness and good vibrations :)
