Ok 13 is running right now stove top about 550 with air control out about 1/8. We had air control open she went up to about 720 and shut the air dropped down to 650 within a min. Man did I have some secondaries when I pushed the air in at 720. Stove works great. Any tips for a longer burn are greatly appreciated. I get about 5-6 hours although I did load up at 7 am and came home at 630pm stirred around my ash put some kindling and she lit right up

That's good for the 13. Being able to fire up from the coals/ashes is really, really good :)

Doesn't sound like your temps were out of line (but I don't know your set up).

The 13 will give longer burns times with a staggered layering of the firewood. A base of shorter splits loaded N/S (4, maybe if they're smallish), topped by longer splits going E/W (2 probably), then some smallish rounds to fill in the holes. Will probably get it done, once you shut down the air.

Keep the dog house clean of ash, as well. That's important air to the fire.

Sounds like you are doing well with it.
I used to do the staggering wood splits like Dixie said and it worked well..( n/s..e/w..n/s)...
I bet your glad you got that 13...great stove.. :)

Btw, I would start shutting down the air in increments sooner. Maybe start when stovetop gets to about 500.

Funny that this post is the first I read today...I actually had my best overnight burn last night...loaded her up at 10pm....and at 5:25 am, I had a LOT of coals and she was still putting out heat...Thermostat in the stove room Read 76f at 10pm and 71F at 5:25 am....

This is what I did...I got the idea from another thread but I cannot remember the name...it was recent and it was about loading up a Englander 30????

I used Larger wider splits, like the size of a dictionary. No so much round or long..more flat and thick..2-3"..I pushed a bunch of coals to the right where the door opens. I put the wood in like you would stack a book shelf N/S from Left to right and packed it pretty tight. At the far right of the stove, close to where the door I put some splits which had been cut into 4" lenghts and stacked those up.. (small 4" long splits are from cutting Longer splits around 22" which wouldn't fit into the stove well...think the size of a softball)
Left door cracked for a minute or two, then primary open for a few mintues...I loaded the stove when it was about 300f....shut her down at 500f....I should have taken pics.

whats the hottest you guys have had the stove top?

625f or so.seemed like she could handle a lot more......I took the measurement under the top lip, about 2 inches over the door...dead center..with my IR gun....that seems to give me the hottest readings..I wish I could get her to hold 625 for a few hours...Nice heat at that temp...she seems to cruise for a while in the 400-450 range...That being totally shut down...

I think the hottest I saw stovetop was about 700.

A buddy of mine just got the 13 a few weekends a go for his 1200 Sf home and he is loving it. I tried to get him to get the 30 but he thought it would be too much stove for his house. I have had the 30 for one year and i am loving it. Thing buns hot and long. I may consider a 13 for my second floor if I get a good deal at the end of the season.

Probably not. I would not want to run it at that high of a temp for too long. Brief periods during reloads should not do any harm. Let me guess, wifey running the stove last nite?

At least she was running it hot...my wife will let it smolder sometimes if she's lazy...I can tell cuz the glass is dirty and I love to keep it crystal clear..hate the dirty glass....makes for more chimney cleaning....

Temps like that shouldn't harm the stove. The Dixette routinely cruises the 13 at 650 or so.

Clean glass is good :)
