Feeling the Heat

I fear it's not big enough.

I bought 3 tons, am on bag #20 now. Granted, I screwed around the first few days just to see how warm I could get my house. Now, it's settled into a bag a day, more or less...

130 bags left...

Since I bought a second stove for my shop I have also had to rethink my pellet supply.

Normally I use 2 1/2 to 2 3/4 tons per year. I'm now on my third ton with maybe 40 bags left in that stack and 5 left in the shop.

You must use your stove as the primary heat source. I've got two stoves and have burned a grand total of 14 bags thus far this winter. I do use my heat pump as my primary heat source unless it gets below 30 degrees. It's been so warm here that I seldom use my stoves this winter.

At a bag a day you're good for 4 months. I'm further south than you and I've almost gone through a ton of Lignetics. I've switched over to Somersets now that temp are a little more consistently cooler. Still have a ton of Hamers for the really cold days.

If the weather stays mild you may be ok. But the worst is yet to come. February is approaching fast.

How warm are you trying to keep your house? Lower the T-stat a couple of degrees and turn the auger trim down a notch and you will be able to stretch out your pellet stash.

Edit: Actually it would be the flame height for the Mt. Vernon.

I'm running 2 days/bag right now.

No fear of running out.

We have gone through 2 tons out of 4 already.
Wife says I am keeping house a bit warmer. (Maybe)
Also not heating basement with oil this year vs last. (Staying in the low to mid 50's)
Have had to run heat on 2nd floor fewer times.
And have only burned 100 gals. of oil since September! (Mainly for hot water)
I too would like to stretch the pellets but they are cheaper than oil.

If your burning 1 bag a day and with 130 bags left that would put you running out around May 20th.

Sounds like you got enough to me?

If it turns colder you may burn more than 1 bag/day, but come March/April it will probably drop back to 1/2 bag day maybe?

I started out with 200 bags and have 147 left. So i am in the same boat as you but I live farther south. Most days I am burning less than 1 bag.

I started burning mid October so my average so far this season is .62 bags day.

I think I probably will be ok. When I get down to 30 bags if it's not mid-April yet, then I will start to worry.

John97,
what part of bucks county? I am from Chalfont, and went to CB WEST before south was built. Am now living in southern maryland (unfortunately)

We're in eastern panhandle of WV, this is the first year for my Harman Advance. For the past 8 years with my smaller Quadra Fire stove, we always went through about 2 tons, give or take a few bags. Heat pumps are our primary heat, the pellet stove is just to try and decrease the amount of time the heat pumps run in the winter. I can definitely see running through 2 1/2 or even 3 tons in future years since we have the larger Harman stove now.

But in past years, whenever I run out of pellets - usually March sometime - I just go ahead and clean out the stove real good and shut it down until the fall.

Picked up my 4th ton last Friday, I expect to have a half ton left over when the heating season ends

I am such a Rookie. I have a ton and a half left thinking it may last until March? If I were to stock up and buy several tons. I wouldn't know where to stash i? I use my garage for automotive repairs, so I wouldn't want to block that off. My house is chock full of stuff (you know, everyone has stuff of some kind or other). We used to have the basement available, but our Daughter moved back home. So that's out! The only room I have left is my stove room. I could store several tons in there, but I wouldn't want the concrete floor to crack :^)

Forget that.......if you have the ability to COUNT your stash it ain't big enough.

I'd run out tonight and make at least a few trips from HD or Lowes. You could have a cold snap tomorrow morning

:)

I have around 85 bags left...been burning since mid Oct...using around 1 to 2 bags a day...might have to pick some more up in March..I bought 4 tons...stove runs 24/7 most of the time...house stays around 70-72....Glad it's not a cold winter...I'm figuring I would of needed another ton at least. My oil tank looks good...I have only bought a 100 gallons since Thanksgiving..it's used for heating the water..and sometime in the morning the wife turns the heat on..I always turn the pellet stove down during the nights. My Thelin heats well and likes pellets...I going to try some other brands next year...maybe I can get longer burn times...I've used MWP and the Geneva pellets....2 tons each and I've picked up some other to try...live and learn I guess.

20 bags left and looking to get a ton next week. I went to Lowes and watched a guy buy four ton of NA Pellets and a few others take 1 ton each. Think something like 7 ton bought within 30 min!

Weird. Similar story here. I just put in bag number 50 to top the hopper off (gotta have the hopper topped off!!!) and I have 82 bags left. I am averaging about 1.25 bpd (bags per day ;)) I also bought only 100 gallons on September 13th to get me to 5/8 of a tank and I am now down to about 3/8 of a tank. Hoping to only have to buy another 100 gallons for the winter. We use oil for hot water and only about 5 hours total for heat. The thermostats we have tell you how long they have been running in the previous day/week/year. We turn the stove off while we are both at work and were away from the house for a couple days for Christmas.
