sycamore can be nasty to split :) I had some a few years back and split it by hand....holy slam it again with the maul batman!

Right. When the going gets touch, break out the hydraulics.

Anything I can split by hand I will...I'd say a fourth of this sycamore is gonna need hydraulics and the elm in the background will also

You're nuts. I've split 20 cords with a Fiskar's in the last 3-4 years. After my first 1/2 cord of sycamore I got rid of the cord of sycamore I hadn't split yet but was already in my pile. Never again.

mbcijim how big was the sycamore u were splitting?...........the sycamore is tough...but ive also had some that wasnt so bad...2 long and staright dead standers last year about 12 inches in diameter split like a dream...the tree in the pic, i should be able to split most of it until i get into the butt log...and it will be like concrete....i also have about 6 bucked pieces from a big one i cut last year.butt log...and its miserable..im waiting for a good freeze.....if we get one

Anywhere from 12"-24". You must be a better splitter than I am! That stuff isn't allowed on my property anymore. A wedge and a sledge was the only way I could get it split and I just won't do that on a whole tree.

medium wood i would say...little better than soft maple..and maybe not quite as good as cherry
