Well after a month or so away from the wood gathering racket, Doug and I got back to it. Mind you it was very tough to concentrate on the work at hand when the temp. on January 7 reaches 61 degrees! As some may or may not know I am a skier. So these temps and the lack of snow do not bide well with me. In our travels today, saw many people out in shorts, and tee shirts, lots of bikes, with and without motors, folks driving around with the rag tops down, flies. Then the killer for me was a truck with a trailer with, NO not snowmobiles, but jet skis. I am going to lose it! Where the $%^ is WINTER!

Anyway, bucked up all the white oak at Dougs, and he started on a Hauzen.

Muther Nature I hate you!

Yup KC, I didn't think you'd do anything except ski this time of the year. Maybe February will be better. For sure March should be.

The hauzen? Is that the round stack started in last pick?
Curious is it for looks or does is dry wood better/less space etc?

Awesome! good looking oak rounds!

Show us a pic of the finished Holtz! Looks good.

Short for holtzhausen. Yep, round stack. Rumored to speed drying, reality does not prove that. It does work VERY well for compact storage of a bunch of wood. Ugly's get tossed in the middle.

Shhhh.....don't make her mad! She'll smack you in the face with an ice storm or something vengeful.

White oak, one of my favorites. Looks good!

By the way, you ski bums had your year LAST year around here, it's the snow hater's turn!

Actually, I don't hate snow. But my younger daughter recently got her license, so dad gets a bit nervous...

Nothing better than being able to process wood in the winter around here... not a very common site for sure. I had a few large white oaks in my recent scrounge and they were stringy but the splitter made it easy work. I just used some 2 year old white oak the other night and what a pleasure it was to come down to the next morning!

I'm jealous........nice score of white oak.......and I am with ya, I miss winter. Got my snowmobile ready to go, the sleigh I pull behind it to haul wood is ready to go, got some good deads picked out up on the farm, but NO SNOW......I hope Zap is right about the system coming in next week....hope it slams us here in PA!

lot of wood in them there rounds.

Lookin' good.

I have to ask what is the purpose of round stacks? It looks cool but is that all or does it dry faster?

Pete

I'll be spending some time on the H/H tomorrow, Wednesday.
Took the day off from work to work on it. I'll be sure to have iskiatomic to post some more pics when I finish.

I've read a few different opinions on the drying time of the H/H, but truthfully I just kinda the way it'll look at the end of my stacks.

We filled the center with small splits and I'm shooting for the total height to be 7 foot.
It sure confused my old time neighbor anyway.

Assuming you are talking about the start of the holz miete . . . As a hearth.com member you must build at least one holz miete once in your life-time to retain the hearth.com membership card . . . it's a requirement. ;)

I think most folks here build them for the looks . . . some say you can get more wood on a smaller footprint as these can be very stable when built correctly . . . most of us have found the seasoning time is not improved with a holz miete vs. conventional stack of wood.

Jake, I guess I won't be getting a membership card. Just don't see any sense in one other than the novelty of it.

Though it does look nice I think I will skip the round stacks just doesn't make sense to me. Jake I am with Dennis on this one !

I may be with you on this one too.
Spent quite a bit of time on it today, heard some creaking and then 50% of it collapsed.

I walked away and began bucking the pine which dropped in my neighbor's yard.

I'll go back to it over the weekend.
My error was dumping splits into the center which put too much weight on the walls.
Not sure how the center should be filled.

Anyone?

Nice, score, looks like easy splitting too! I feel your pain about the lack of snow and cold temps. No one is more aggravated then me! I got a brand new snow blower sitting in the garage unused. 2 snowmobiles in the barn waiting to be ridden. skis, snowboards, snow shoes all sitting around lonely. I love winter, i love snow, i love cold, that's why I live here. This joke of a winter is really starting to wear on my nerves.

The secret for me is to stack it so that it is tilting inwards . . . the punks, chunks and uglies I toss in the middle actually help support the circle of wood on the outside leaning in . . . As I stack I make sure the whole thing is about the same height and is always level or tilting in slightly . . . and I fill as I go.
